World Junior A Challenge

World Junior A Challenge

Created to showcase the talent in Canada's 10 Junior A leagues, the World Junior A Challenge debuted in Yorkton and Humboldt, SK in 2006.

Beginning in November 2011, the CJHL Prospects Event will be held in conjunction with the World Junior A Challenge. The newly-combined event will be a unique opportunity for CJHL stars to showcase their talent on an international stage and simultaneously provide CJHL prospects an unprecedented audience of scouts from across North America.

The CJHL Prospects Event showcases the top 40 NHL draft-eligible players in the Canadian Junior Hockey League. The event is a two-game total goal series between Team East and Team West. Player selection is a joint initiative of the CJHL and NHL Central Scouting.

The Canada West roster is comprised of players from the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) and Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL). Canada West captured gold in 2006 (Yorkton, SK), and in 2007 (Trail, B.C.), and most recently won the silver medail in 2008 (Camrose, AB) and 2009 (Summerside, PEI).

Canada East won a medal at the first three World Junior A Challenges taking silver in 2006 and 2007, before winning bronze in 2008. Team East lost to Russia in the Bronze Medal game in 2009 and won silver again in 2010 (Penticton, BC). The Canada East roster is comprised of players from the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL), Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL), Ligue de hockey junior AAA du Quebec (LHJAAAQ) and Maritime Junior A Hockey League (MHL).

The Hockey Canada Board of Directors has announced Langley, BC as the host community of the 2011 World Junior A Challenge and Yarmouth, NS as the 2012 host.
