Former AJHL Player Attended NHL Rookie Camp

NEWARK, NJ – After appearing on several pre-draft ranking lists this past season, Rocket alumni Zach Aston-Reese continued his march to the professional ranks as he was invited to participate in the New Jersey Devils 2012 Rookie Camp, which took place recently at the Rockets home-ice facility, the AmeriHealth Pavilion.

The Staten Island, N.Y., native, who is committed to attending university and playing NCAA Division I hockey at Northeastenr, took the ice for a week of conditioning and development with other NHL hopefuls.

“This is a great honor for Zach,” commented New Jersey Rockets Head Coach and Director of Player Development Bob Thornton.  “He showed off his skills in front of the Devils coaching and front office staff and got feedback from them on areas of strength and things that he needs to work on and continue his development.  This is another hurdle crossed for him as he drives towards a professional career.”

Aston-Reese, who has spent the last two seasons with the Lincoln Stars of the United States Hockey League (USHL), used the week to further improve his rising pro stock.  “Being ranked this year by Central Scouting was a big honor,” Aston-Reese commented.  “Now I got to spend a week in front of an NHL staff skating among the top prospects in their organization."

Aston-Reese skated alongside the Devils top pick in the recently completed 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Stefan Matteau, whom Zach played against in the USHL.  Other top prospects who participated were Darcy Zajac, Keith Kinkaid, Scott Wedgewood, Reece Scarlett and Eric Gelinas.
