AJHL NewsAJHL Coach Advances To American Hockey League
NEWARK, NJ – New Jersey Rockets assistant coach Doug Holewa has accepted an assistant coaching position with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the American Hockey League affiliate of the New York Islanders.
Holewa, who rejoined the Rockets Junior coaching staff in 2010 after serving a tour in Iraq with the United States Marine Corp, will serve under Bridgeport’s first year Head Coach, former NHLer Scott Pellerin.
“Doug was a great resource to have on my staff,” commented New Jersey Rockets head coach and director of player development Bob Thornton. “Doug was an integral part of our off-ice training program, and with his playing and personal history, Doug served as a great role model to our players. (He) constantly pushed them to reach greater levels of achievement. We wish him nothing but the best in his new position."
“Getting the opportunity to coach with an NHL affiliate is a great opportunity,” commented Holewa. “My time with the Rockets was a great learning experience for me. I learned a lot from Coaches Thornton, Samms, Mullen and Deresky and now I get to share those experiences in Bridgeport where I will have the opportunity to learn firsthand from Coach Pellerin, who had over 500 games in the NHL. Hopefully others will look to me as a role model for hard work and perseverance. Even coaches can advance to the next level.”
