Pilots 8, Miners 7 ABL Tournament
Kevin Viers and Micah Green delivered RBI singles in the top of the 11th inning Tuesday night at Mulcahy Stadium and the Anchorage Glacier Pilots held on for their second straight win in the Alaska Baseball League Tournament with an 8-7 victory over the Mat-Su Miners.
Mat-Su, which trailed 6-1 after four and a half innings, used Christin Stewart's two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to plate Spencer Mahoney and forge a 6-6 tie. But after A.J. Simcox singled to drive in Mahoney and cut the Pilots' lead to 8-7 in the bottom of the 11th, Pilots reliever Justin Dellinger got Stewart to pop up to shortstop Viers to end the game.
Mat-Su's ninth-inning, two-out tying rally came against Pilots closer Brendan McCurry, who blew a save for the first time this summer. He has allowed just three earned runs in 22 innings.
The Pilots and Miners opened the tournament with victories Monday night, when the Miners rallied to beat the Anchorage Bucs 3-2 in 10 innings and the Pilots handled the Chugiak Chinooks, 3-1.
