OHA'S Oldest Continuous League Dawns New Name

on Dec 31, 1969

CAMBRIDGE, ONTARIO--The Ontario Hockey Association President Brent Ladds announced today that the Association's oldest league will begin the 2011-12 season under a new banner, “Allan Cup Hockey. “

The new name gives a better reflection of the brand for the League and accentuates the fact the circuit competes for the oldest National hockey championship in the world.  The five-team league consists of former Canadian champions, the Brantford Blast along with Dundas Real McCoys, Orillia Tundra, Whitby Dunlops, and Norwood Vipers.

“The Board of Directors of the ACH have worked diligently to provide quality hockey, and to expand the League in a responsible manner," said OHA President Ladds.

"The calibre of hockey at this level is as strong as ever and we look forward to positive growth in the coming years," Ladds added.

Brantford and Orillia will open the ACH regular season on Friday, October 7th.  Each team will play a 28-game schedule.  The league boasts many former minor professional players as well as stars from the Ontario Hockey League and Canadian Interuniversity Sport.  In addition, the League attracts former National Hockey League players, who compete for their local teams.  The average age of players in Allan Cup Hockey is 25.7 years.

The ACH provides a high level of hockey in all of its communities.  A conditional franchise has been awarded to the City of Cambridge for the 2012-13 season.

“The ACH Board anticipates another successful season with a new name which better reflects our tradition.  The ACH has competed in the Allan Cup Tournament during the last four years with Brantford winning the title while being the tournament in 2008," said Don Robertson, Chairman of the Board.

"Our players continue to become younger and faster and take advantage of the rules, which provide for more wide-open skilled hockey than ever before.  The level of support in all of our communities continues to grow steadily."
