NewsDate: Sep 20, 2008 CAPS BLANK PANTHERS AT SHOWCASE
The Brampton Capitals put an end to the 5 game loosing streak in style on Saturday afternoon when they shutout the Pickering Panthers 3-0 at the Governor's Showcase in Bowmanville. Despite having to play three games in less than 48 hours, the Capitals put in a gutsy effort Saturday afternoon and were rewarded for it. After two tough lossed the previous two nights, the Capitals rallied behind the solid netminding of rookie Jared Lockhurts to pick up their second win of the season. The team showed all those in attendance that their current record was not a reflection of the talent assembled on the Capitals roster. The victory was a big boost to a squad who has come up short in a number of very tightly contested matches. Both teams had several good scoring chances in the opening twenty minutes but the solid goaltending of Jared Lockhurt (Brampton) and C. Seiler (Pickering) kept the game knotted at zero. Brampton held a slight shot advantage in the first, outshooting the Panthers 13-11. Daniel Gubert opened the scoring in the second period with a power-play marker at 6:30. Tyler Leimbrock and Cameron Bernier picked up the helpers on the play. Again both teams exchanged good scoring opportunities but were turned away by excellent goaltending. With rookie goalie, Jared Lockhurst holding a shutout midway through the game, veteran keeper, Taylor Hewson made the stand-up call to forgo his half of the game to allow the younger Lockhurst try and earn his first Junior 'A' shutout. Branden Eden increased the Capitals lead to 2 early in the third slipping a wrist shot over the pad of Seiler. Chris Muise would put the nail in the coffin late in the third when he ripped a cross-ice pass past Seiler with just over a minute remaining in the game. Lockhurst would make another 10 saves in the final frame en route to his first shutout. He turned away a total of 31 Pickering shots. The Capitals return home to face the Buffalo Jr. Sabres on Thursday night at Brampton Memorial Arena. Game time is 7:30 pm. Click here to go back to news articles |
