CAPS DOWN SABRES IN OT

The Brampton Capitals clawed their way back to .500 on Thursday with a 5-4 win over the visiting Buffalo Jr. Sabres.  Sam Nyberg provided the heroics beating Derek Mohney just over 3 minutes into overtime.  Nyberg who was cut by a high stick a few minutes earlier, took a cross-ice pass from Chase Nieuwendyk and ripped a shot over the shoulder of Mohney to give the Capitals the extra point.

The young Capitals squad still showed signs that they have much to learn this season with a less than spetacular performance on the night.  Taylor Hewson, making his first start of season, was solid between the pipes and keep the Capitals in the game early.  Despite scoring 15 seconds into the game the Capitals were not able to maintain that momentum and were often caught on their heels in the first period.  The Sabres quickly rebounded after the opening goal and went on to have several good scoring chances en route to outshooting the Capitals 12-10 in the first.

In the second period the Sabres were rewarded for their hard work, scoring twice in a span of 1 minute.  Ryan Stouffer scored at 5:45 to tie the game at one and Chris Kaleta gave the Sabres the lead at 6:46.  Capitals veteran forward, Josh Ruys scored his much anticipated first goal of the year converting a creative little pass from Chase Nieuwendyk to tie the game at 2, 30 seconds later.  Mohney and Hewson shut the door the rest of the way as both teams recorded 14 shots on net.

The Capitals came out flat to start the third and once again found themselves trailing early.  Andrew Moyer scored for the Sabres just over a minute into the third and call-up Ben Certo scored a power-play goal 2 minutes later to give the Sabres a 4-2 lead.  It looked like the Capitals would spoil a solid performance from Hewson until late in the third period.  Veteran forward, Chris Muise took a Sam Nyberg breakout pass and make a nifty little move on Mohney to get the Capitals to within one.  The Capitals pulled their goalie in favour of an extra attacker and found a way to tie the game.  Parked out front of the Sabres net, 6'5 defenseman, Justin DaSilva batted a puck out of mid-air and bulged the twine with just 6 seconds left on the clock.

Having already lost twice in overtime and another one in a shootout, the Capitals hoped to come out on the winning side Thursday.  Fifty seconds into the extra frame, Sam Nyberg was clipped by a high stick and cut for a possible couple stiches.  After being able to get the bleeding to stop, Nyberg managed to get on the ice for the latter stages of double minor.  Nieuwendyk spotted him open on the weak side and slid a pass to veteran defenseman who made no mistake beating Mohney.

The Capitals will make the short trip to Georgetown this Saturday night before returning home to face a new opponent in the Seguin Bruins.  Game time is 7:30 at Brampton Memorial Arena.
