Coventry Blaze will officially retire Russ Cowley’s #17 jersey on Sunday February 18th 2018, when the Sheffield Steelers visit The Skydome.

Cowley retired at the end of the 2016/17 season after sixteen years with the Blaze, making a club record 920 appearances during that span.

Featuring for the Blaze in both the British National League and the Elite League, Cowley won four Elite League championships, two Challenge Cups and two EIHL Playoff titles during his playing career, helping the Blaze complete the EIHL Grand Slam in 2005 (League, Cup, Playoffs) as well as helping the West Midlands side complete the BNL League and Playoff double in 2003.

Cowley registered 154 goals and 452 points during his Blaze career, and made more than 60 appearances for Team GB - helping the national side win gold, and promotion, at the 2017 IIHF World Championships (Division 1B) in Belfast last April, his final competitive appearances.

The 34-year-old becomes just the fifth player to have his number retired by the organisation, joining Steve Chartrand (#12), Adam Calder (#25), Dan Carlson (#26) and Stephen Cooper (#55).
