The Helena Bighorns hosted the Bozeman Icedogs at the Helena Ice Arena last Friday night with the Bighorns winning 7-3. Alec Goplen scored the first goal of the game 18 seconds into the first period. Adam Johnson scored the first powerplay goal to tie the game 5:09 into the period. Goplen scored a shorthanded goal to give the Icedogs a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission. The Bighorns scored their second powerplay goal tying the game at two 1:17 into the period. Goplen scored his third goal of the game on the powerplay giving him his first hat trick of the season. The Bighorns scored five straight starting with Zach Maxwell tying the game at three with four minutes left in the period. Taylor Laneville (2), John Celli and Alec Burks all had goals in the third period for the Bighorns. Taylor Laneville led the Bighorns in scoring with two goals and two assists. The Yellowstone Quake hosted the Butte Roughriders last Friday with the Quake winning 8-1, and the Quake out shot the Roughriders 65-16. Tyler Roberts scored the only goal in the first period. Matthew Tackett and Nick Hinsberg scored the first two goals in the second period. The Roughriders only goal was scored by Patrick Stowe on the powerplay. Jake Doty scored the first powerplay goal for the Quake 19:45 into the second period. The Quake scored four goals in the thrid period with the fifth goal of the game scored by Mathew Peddie. Mathew Schulz scored a pair of goals in the third period with a shorthanded and powerplay goal. Tyler Roberts scored the Quakes third powerplay goal and the final goal of the game. The Quake were 3 for 11 on the powerplay. Tyler Roberts led the Quake in scoring with two goals and two assists.
The Quake defeated the Bighorns for the third time this season winning Saturday night 2-1. The Quake scored two goals in the first period. Nick Kent scored the first goal 12:36 into the period, and Tyler Boyce scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal 14:58 into the period. The Bighorns only goal of the game came 6:22 into the second period by Cody Hess assisted by Nolan Grauer and Adam Johnson. Alex Larson saved 32 of 33 shots he faced earning his 17th win of the season. Ryan Sutliffe saved 45 of 47 shots he faced in the lost. Sutliffe is 22-4 this season with three of his four losses against the Quake. Chris Rinaldi, Mathew Schulz, Tyler Boyce and Jake Doty all had assist for the Quake. The Icedogs kept their slim playoff hopes alive on Saturday by beating the Bulls 3-1 at the Haynes Pavillion. The Bulls can clinch the fourth spot with a win or Icedogs lost next weekend. Keith Tessin scored the only goal for the Bulls 1:27 into the first period assisted by Jason Effertz and Taylor Dornbier. Dustin Simmons tied the game with assists by Zach Baker and Cody Pixley 5:48 into the period. The Icedogs had a 2-1 lead after one with a goal by Alex Gutierrez assisted by Alec Goplen and James Lowrey. After a scoreless second period, Gutierrez scored his second goal of the game assisted by Dustin Simmions 4:25 into the third period. Taylor Dgostino earned his first junior victory saving 35 of 36 shots he faced. Gutierrez and Simmons finished the game with two points.
The final game of the weekend was on Sunday with the Bighorns traveling to play the Quake for the second time this weekend. The Quake's first goal was scored by Chase Cooney 3:28 into the period. Chris Rinaldi scored an unassisted goal with 36 seconds left in the period. Adam Johnson put the Bighorns on the board with his goal 19:32 into the period assisted by Rudy Pino and Zach Maxwell. Rudy Pino tied the game at two with his powerplay goal 47 seconds into the period assisted by Chad James and Zach Maxwell. Adam Johnson scored a shorthanded goal with a little more than four minutes left in the period giving the Bighorns a 3-1 after two. Johnson earned his third hat trick of the season with the game-winning goal 4:31 into the third. Jake Doty scored the Quake's third goal on the powerplay, but the Quake came up short losing 4-3. Johnson led all players in scoring with his three points.
