Kincardine Set to Host Prospects and All Star Game Saturday
CAMBRIDGE ON – This Saturday the Kincardine Bulldogs of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) Western Junior C League (WJC) will host Prospects and All Star games against teams from the Georgian Bay Mid Ontario Junior C Hockey League (GBMJCHL).
This marks the fifth year that the two leagues will face each other in an All Star game. With home ice advantage in the Schmalz Cup playoffs on the line, this game has always been one that neither league wants to give up.
Historically, home ice was decided by a coin toss, however with the adoption of a new format, similar to Major League Baseball (All Star Game decides home field advantage in World Series), the two leagues decided the All Star Game would determine who got the extra game in the Schmalz Cup Quarter Finals.
The leagues agreed to a four-year cycle, which was completed last year, and this is the fifth year for the fall showdown.
With much on the line, the game takes a tenor of a league final and doesn’t look anything like a traditional All Star Game. The leagues build their team with lines and defence pairings and even role players. There is pre-scouting that goes on and coaches have even been known to match lines.
After the previous four All Star Games between the WJC and the GBMJCHL the series is tied two wins each.
In addition to the All Star Game, the Top Prospects from each league will face off against each other prior to the All Stars hitting the ice.
If you don’t feel like wiaitng until the spring to see a playoff game, then you’re in luck, head to the Davidson Centre in Kincardine on Saturday for the 5:00pm Prospects Game followed by the 7:30pm All Star Game.
