Newmarket beats Whitby 9-7 after comeback scare

The Whitby Fury tried their best to erase a five-goal deficit, but the Newmarket Hurricanes would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 9-7.

Newmarket made the score 8-3 on a goal by Ryan Kruss at 45 seconds in the third period, and Whitby got as close as 9-7 when Mitch Emerson scored 19:02 into the third period.

 

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 3:49 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

The Hurricanes racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with five minors and two majors for 20 minutes in penalty time. Newmarket had been averaging 18.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Hurricanes outdid their season average for goals scored. Newmarket has scored at the pace of 4.0 goals per game during the current campaign.

The Hurricanes were led by Trevor Petersen, who grabbed three goals and two assists. Newmarket also got points from Oshowy Jordan, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Kyle Stephan, who also registered one goal and two assists, Taylor Joseph, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Justin Maiolino, who also finished with two goals and two assists, and Kruss, who also racked up one goal and two assists. More assists for Newmarket came via Ian Farrell, who had one, Christian Dedonato, who had two, and Cameron Nicoll, who had four.

The Fury forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 10 minors and one major for 25 minutes in penalty time. Whitby surpassed its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. The Fury forced Newmarket goalie Bo Bessette to work between the pipes, taking 40 shots. Whitby bested its season scoring average. This season, the Fury average 4.0 goals per contest.

Whitby additionally got points from Henry Thompson, who also had one goal and one assist, Jeff Murray, who also grabbed two goals and two assists, and Sean Deroch, who also finished with one goal and two assists. Whitby also got a goal from Adam Clements as well. In addition, Whitby received assists from Greg Milner, who had two and Connor Hale, Jonathan OHara, and Jeremy Wu, who each chipped in one.

Bo Bessette made 33 saves for the Hurricanes on 40 shots. Newmarket registered four goals on eight power play opportunities. For the Hurricanes, Jacob Piltzmaker was ejected from the game. Whitby took out Tyler Feaver after he had made 12 saves and installed Boyd Diclemente in goal, where he finished with eight saves and the loss. The Fury registered two goals on four power play opportunities. Whitby ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Keegan Cairns was ejected from the game.
