Wellington hangs on, beats Stouffville 3-1
The Wellington Dukes beat the Stouffville Spirit, 3-1, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.
A goal 19:28 into the the first period by Josh Supryka proved to be the game winner, and powered Wellington to the victory Erick Delaurentis picked up the assist.
The Dukes were led by goalie Tyson Teichmann, who finished with 47 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Teichmann will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.73.
Stouffville's power play was ineffective against Wellington's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.
The Dukes' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Stouffville power plays. Wellington forced the Spirit goalie Daniel Mannella to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.
The Dukes were helped by Joe McKeown, who racked up one goal. McKeown scored 16:14 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Wellington. Supryka provided the assist. Wellington also got points from Supryka, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Wellington also got a goal from Chad Thibodeau as well. More assists for Wellington came via Abbot Girduckis, who had one.
Stouffville excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. The Spirit's offense operated below they season average. Stouffville averages 3.1 goals per game. The Spirit's offense rang up 48 shots on Wellington's net.
Stouffville was led by Chad Burrows, who scored the team's only goal. Burrows scored short handed 2:04 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Wellington. The Spirit played down a man on Kyler Challis's cross checking. Nick Thomakos picked up the assist.
The Dukes incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. Wellington ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Mike Soucier was ejected from the game. Mannella rejected 31 shots on goal for Stouffville. The Spirit incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
