Burlington falls to Newmarket in overtime, 5-4 (OT)

The Newmarket Hurricanes pulled out a 5-4 (OT) overtime victory over the Burlington Cougars on a clutch goal by Sam Hu.

 

Hu had a great game for Newmarket, netting two goals. Hu found the back of the net on the power play 7:13 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Newmarket and again while 2:15 into the fourth to make the score 5-4 Newmarket.

The Hurricanes kept Burlington's goalie busy throughout the game, and Jeremy Currie made 48 saves on 53 shots. Newmarket struggled on the penalty kill, allowing the Cougars to score four power play goals on six chances.

Trevor Petersen also scored for Newmarket. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Justin Maiolino, who had two, Ryan Kruss, who had three, and Curtis Harvey, Christian Dedonato, and Brandon Francisco, who contributed one a piece.

The Hurricanes were unable to stop Burlington from sending pucks towards the net, and the Cougars eventually piled up 34 shots on goal.

Burlington was led by Tyler Lepore, who grabbed one goal and two assists. Lepore scored on the power play 11:11 into the third period to make the score 4-4. The Cougars earned a power play opportunity when Adam Smith was put in the box for hooking. Paolo DeSousa picked up the assist. Burlington also got points from DeSousa, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Burlington also had goals scored by Dillon Ciprietti and Viktor Meuller, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Burlington were Spencer Herbst, who had one and Ryan Sullivan and Christian Burel, who contributed two a piece.

Bo Bessette made 30 saves for Newmarket on 34 shots. The Hurricanes incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Burlington incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. For the Cougars, Neil Aird was ejected from the game.
