35 CJHL ALUMNI CROWNED NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
It was a golden weekend for 35 alumni of the Canadian Junior Hockey League. The SAIT Trojans defeated the NAIT Ooks on Saturday night to capture the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) title with 24 CJHL alumni on the roster. On Sunday, the University of Alberta Golden Bears recorded a victory over the host Saskatchewan Huskies to win a record 14th University Cup and crown 11 CJHL alumni as National Champions.
The title is the first for the Trojans since the 2009-2010 season. The SAIT Trojans roster was composed of 12 past players of the AJHL, 7 from the BCHL, 4 SJHL alumni and 1 OJHL alumnus. In 2013, the NAIT Ooks won the ACAC Championship over the SAIT Trojans with a roster that also included 24 CJHL alumni.
For the Golden Bears, it was the first national championship since 2008, who were skating in their 19th CIS title match, another all-time mark. The roster included 8 AJHL alumni, and 1 alumnus from the BCHL, SJHL and OJHL. The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds captured the 2013 University Cup also with eleven CJHL alumni on the roster.
Over 2,030 CJHL alumni are pursuing their academic and hockey careers at colleges and universities across North America in the 2013-2014 season. A total of 850 former CJHL players spent the 2013-2014 season competing in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), Alberta Colleges Athletic Association (ACAC) and BC Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL). This
represented 61% of players on Canadian university and college team rosters.
