Replacing the OJHL Goaltender-of-the-Year between the pipes, netminder Andy Munroe was superb between the pipes for the Aurora Tigers, as he did not allow a goal in a 1-0 victory over the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots, cutting their series lead to 3-2.
Despite the lack of goal scoring, game five in the 2014 Championship Series proved to be one of the more exciting thus far. Both teams came out flying in period one, trading scoring chances at either end. Fast-skating, hard-hitting, the way the game is meant to be played with barely any whistles and no penalties called, the two teams entertained all that were in attendance. Shots favoured the home side 14-12 after one period of play.
Period two saw much of the same, but with the Tigers holding the advantage in play, outshooting the Patriots 13-6. The Tigers would beat the Patriots' Evan Buitenhuis twice during the period, but both goals were called back with the net off the moorings on the first and a high-stick directing the puck into the net on the second. This was followed up by a pair of 5-on-3 man advantage's in which the Tigers couldn't bury the biscuit.
Continuing to roll in period three, Aurora finally bulged the twine with a good goal as Dylan Sikura buried his 10th of the post-season five and a half minutes into the frame from Calvin Higley. Despite some late pressure, Munroe, held the fort for his third win and first shutout of the playoffs. Final shots favoured the home squad 38-25 with both netminders standing tall for their clubs.
The Tigers swept the three stars of the game, led by first star Drake Board and followed by second star Dylan Sikura and third star Andy Munroe.
Aurora is now 3-0 in elimination games during the playoffs and will look to stave off elimination one more time on Sunday afternoon at Westwood Arena. Please note that puck drop has been moved up to 2:00pm from the orignally scheduled start time of 6:30pm.
