HIGLEY COMMITS TO YORK
Aurora Tigers forward Calvin Higley (photo credit - Mike Ivall/OJHL Images) has confirmed his commitment to join the York University Lions beginning with the 2014-15 OUA season.
The Aurora, Ontario native would make his debut with the Villanova Knights in 2008-09, playing two games as an affiliate from the York-Simcoe Express Minor Midget 'AAA' squad. Following the season, Higley would be selected by the Plymouth Whalers in the 6th round, 113th overall, of the 2009 OHL Priority Selection.
Higley made the jump to the OJHL full-time in 2009-10 as a 16-year old member of the Orangeville Crushers. The young forward accounted himself well, notching 3 goals and 13 points in 48 regular season games played, while also playing his first four playoff contests. Following the season, Higley was on the move for the first time after being traded to the Markham Waxers. He would continue his progression, more than doubling his offensive output to 13 goals and 29 points, followed by 17 goals and 45 points in 2011-12 to finish sixth on the Waxers in scoring. Playing two rounds in the 2012 post-season, Higley finished tied for third in team scoring with six points and when the club suspended operations in the off-season, his stock was a valued commodity, ultimately being picked up by division rival, the Newmarket Hurricanes.
While Higley's numbers would be down slightly in 2012-13 with the 'Canes, he finished the year with 14 goals and 31 points, fourth best on his newest club. His play earned him a spot on the OJHL North Division All-Star Team that competed at the 2012 Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge that took place in Wellington, Ontario. However, it was in the post-season where Higley truly made his mark, notching 16 points in 22 games as the Hurricanes went on an impressive run that saw them come within a game of winning the OJHL title before falling in game seven to the St. Michael's Buzzers.
Higley was one the move for the final time entering the 2013-14 season, joining his hometown Tigers as they looked to improve upon an impressive 2013 campaign. The veteran pivot would not disappoint, setting career-high's with 22 goals, 32 assists and 54 points to finish fifth on the club in regular season scoring, while helping Aurora capture a second consecutive North Division regular season title. For the second consecutive season, Higley helped march his club to the OJHL Championship Series, notching 11 points in 19 games played as the Tigers captured the North-East Conference Championship and finished as runner-up to the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots to end his junior career.
Congratulations to Calvin on a tremendous OJHL career and best of luck at the next level!
