Mike Galati (photo credit - Brian Watts/OJHL Images) has been named the new head coach of the Hamilton Red Wings, effective immediately. The team announced the coaching change Thursday afternoon.

A familiar face to long-time Red Wings fans, Galati coached the Wings for the 2008-09 season, compiling a 28-18-3-4 record and recording a .594 winning percentage.

He also coached the Upper Canada Patriots and the Pickering Panthers, where he began the 2014-15 season. He had an 8-4-0-3 record with Pickering when he was replaced by Matt Muir in late October. Red Wings goaltender Jordan Cartney, as well as forwards Joe Mitchell and Nick Lepone all played for Galati with the Panthers this season.

Prior to beginning his coaching career, the 37-year-old Galati played eight seasons of pro hockey in Europe, making stops in Scotland, England, Belgium, Italy, France, and the Netherlands. He played his junior hockey for the Guelph Storm and the Owen Sound Platers of the Ontario Hockey League, as well as the Bramalea Blues of the OPJHL.

Galati replaces former Red Wings head coach and general manager Scott Elliott. Assistant coach Brad Watt is also no longer with the team.

The Hamilton Red Wings would like to welcome Mike Galati back to the Red Wings family!
