Whitby holds on for 3-2 win against Toronto Jr. Canadiens
The Whitby Fury survived a determined comeback attempt by the Toronto Jr. Canadiens Junior Canadiens on the way to a 3-2 win.
Whitby made the score 3-1 on a goal by Ryan Kirkup at 4:12 in the second period, and Toronto Jr. Canadiens got as close as 3-2 when Kevin Hancock scored 11:48 into the third period.
The Fury pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 37 penalty minutes.
Whitby excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. The Fury forced the Junior Canadiens goalie Daniel Lopapa to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots.
Whitby also had goals scored by Zach Viminitz and Nik Coric, who scored one goal each. In addition, Whitby received assists from Stefan von Engelbrechten, who had two and Luke Keenan and Jeremy Wu, who each chipped in one.
Anthony Trujillo also scored for Toronto Jr. Canadiens. More assists for Toronto Jr. Canadiens came via Matthew Ferrari, Sal Filice, and Dakota Brancatella, who contributed one each.
Tyler Feaver recorded 27 saves for Whitby. The Fury registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Team's William Ward and Dakota Kettrick were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Daniel Lopapa made 28 saves for Toronto Jr. Canadiens on 31 shots. The Junior Canadiens ended with 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. Toronto Jr. Canadiens ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Luca Farrace was ejected from the game.
