DAY THREE WRAP UP AT THE OJHL GOVERNORS SHOWCASE

September 22, 2017
9:41 AM EDT

GAME ONE MILTON AND TRENTON

A close contest between two clubs that were far apart in points last season as the Golden Hawks edged the IceHawks 3-2. Caleb Boman's power play goal with just under four minutes left in the third period was the decider. Ex-Soo Thunderbird Zach Senecal and Rex Moe also lit the lamp for the Golden Hawks. Zac Sirota gave Milton an early 1-0 lead which stood up until the final frame. Eric Ciccolini had the other score for the IceHawks. Max Ewart had two assists for the winners. Trenton moves to 2-3 in the East while Milton remain winless in the West at 0-4-0-1.

GAME TWO ST. MICHAEL'S AND NEWMARKET

A  2-2 tie between the Buzzers and the Hurricanes as each club scored a goal in each of the first and second periods. In the opening frame Newmarket's Cole Thiessen and St. Michael's Devlin Shanahan found the net and in the second it was Cole Howran for the Hurricanes and Austin Clapham for the Buzzers. Cosimo Lazzarino made 21 saves for the Buzzers and the Hurricanes' Vince Michelizzi stopped 20. The North Division team is now 2-1-1-0 and the South club moves to 4-2-1 good for second in the Division.

GAME THREE OAKVILLE AND AURORA

The 100 percent (3-0 going in) Aurora Tigers and the Oakville Blades squared off in what on paper looked like a close battle and on the ice it worked out that way. The teams exchanged man-advantage goals in period one with Mack Graham, formerly of the Steinbach Pistons, scoring for the Blades and Christopher Giroday replying for the Tigers. The only goal of period two came from Aurora's Marcel Pericao, unassisted, his first of the season and it would turn out to be the winner. Jack Irvine made 15 saves for the win and Christian Purboo stopped 20 of 22. The Blades record now reads 2-2-1 and they remain in the basement of the highly competitive South Division.

GAME FOUR TORONTO JUNIOR CANADIENS AND STOUFFVILLE

The Spirit are finding wins hard to come by early this season and they could not pull one out against the Junior Canadiens who took it 5-4 in overtime on David Sherman's second goal of the game. Stouffville went up 2-0 only to see the J.C's get four straight before they replied with two more to force the extra time. Jake Joffe, Jason Pineo and Anthony Paveglio scored for Toronto while Isaak Phillips, Kosta Manikis, Wesley Weir and Jack Varga had the Spirit markers. For the winners Jack McBain had three assists and move up to 4-1-0-1. Stouffville now sit at 1-4-0-1.

GAME FIVE PICKERING AND BURLINGTON

Following the pattern of the day's previous games, close contests of the hockey kind, the Panthers got the better of the Cougars of Burlington by a 4-3 count in extra time. Three times Burlington had the lead and three times the Panthers evened it up by the end of each period. Josh LeBlanc, Matt Goeree and Zack Elson tallied for the Cougars. Josh Argier, Davis Tiegen-Katsumi and Anthony Stavrou scored in regulation for the Panthers. The Cougars goals all came with the man-advantage and the Panthers scored once by that route. In the overtime rookie Massimo Petricca gave the 'visitors' the extra point. The win puts Pickering in third spot in the North at 2-2 while Burlington remain second in the West at 3-1-0-2.

GAME SIX MISSISSAUGA AND MARKHAM

Finishing off the tournament the Chargers hurried to a 3-0 first period lead on goals by Kyle Lewis, Maxwell Routledge and Brandon Yeamans and held on to best the Markham Royals 5-3. Braedyn Aubin and Mitchell Gustavsen narrowed the gap to two in the second frame before Kyler Matthews put the Chargers back up by two. Orion Hexamer had the game winner just past the midpoint of the third before Aubin tabbed his second of the contest and sixth of the season to make it the 5-3 final. Mississauga goes to the .500 mark at 4-4 and the Royals have three points in their six games.

South Division clubs which went 4 for 4 on Wednesday did pretty well again on the tournament's last day with two wins a loss and a tie.

As you can see from the above recaps a day of close games and a fitting way to end the tournament. Four of the games decided by one goal, one tie and a two-goal game.

Overall the South Division clubs won 10 games, the West 6, the North 4 and the East 1 with one draw.
