EASTERN CANADA CUP DAY 2 RECAP
Game 1- NOJHL (0-1 going in) and LHJQ 'Burrows' (1-0) in Group A.
Yesterday the NOJHL scored just one goal in their loss to CCHL 'Red' and again in the opening match of day two they had just one goal but this time it was enough to win the game against LHJQ 'Burrows' 1-0. A pair of Soo Eagles were the heroes with goalkeeper CARTER MCPHAIL saving 30 shots and NICK TECHEL scoring the only goal with just over five minutes left in the second stanza assisted by teammate Kobe Keller. The Eagles play out of the venerable Pullar Stadium in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan which was built in 1939 and is a great place to watch a hockey game. McPhail played for Little Caesar's U18 squad before joining the Eagles. Jeremy Belisle made 16 saves for the 'Burrows'.

Game 2- MHL (0-1) and LHJQ 'St. Louis' (1-0) in Group B,
All the goals came in the first half as the MHL setback the the LHJQ 'St. Louis' 2-1. Two powerplay goals within 13 seconds of each other made the difference for the MHL team. JORDAN KING of the Amherst Ramblers and MATT BARRON of the Yarmouth Mariners did the damage. King, the Ramblers' captain, was born in Brampton.The LHJQ squad got one back very late in the period from ANTHONY IMBEAULT of the Chambly Forts. Jacob Stewart of the the Valley Wildcats stopped 17 for the win. All four of the teams in the first two games now move to 1 and 1.

Game 3- OJHL 'Coffey' (1-1) and CCHL 'Red' (1-1) in Group A.
TRAVIS BROUGHMAN of the Carleton Place Canadians had the game winner as the 'Reds' topped Team Coffey 3-2. Teammate SAMUEL KNOBLAUCH, the leading pointscorer in the CCHL, and ANDREW JARVIS of the Brockville Braves, on the powerplay, had the other 'Reds' markers. For Team Coffey it was AIDAN MCFARLAND of the Kingston Voyageurs and HUDSON LAMBERT from the Orangeville Flyers. The 'Reds' never trailed in the game and outshot the OJHL team 32-18. Jeremie Forget was in goal for the CCHL'ers and Chris Elliot manned the net for Team Coffey. The win moves CCHL Red to 2 and 1 while Team Coffey, along with NOJHL and LHJQ 'Burrows', falls to 1 and 2.

Game 4- OJHL 'Nieuwendyk' (0-2) and CCHL 'White' (2-0) in Group B.
CCHL 'White' became the first team to win three games at the tournament by beating OJHL 'Nieuwendyk' 5-1. The OJHL team has struggled to score goals being shutout in their first two games and this afternoon only JONATHAN HAMPTON, with the first goal of the game, unassisted, was able to beat the Hawkesbury Hawks' Matthew Petizian who made 15 saves. In goal for the 'Nieuwendyk' Bradley van Schubert of Aurora saved 26. Goalscorers for the winners were CAMERON WHITE (Ottawa), PIEERE-LUC VEILETTE (Ottawa), ASHTON FRY (Kemptville 73's), ZACH SALLOUM, (Navan), his third of the tournament, and DAVID JANKOWSKI (Hawkesbury).

Game 5- OJHL 'Hawerchuk' (1-1) and NOJHL (1-1) in Group A.
MARIO CAVALIERE of the Georgetown Raiders made seventeen saves to help OJHL Team Hawerchuk overcome the NOJHL 3-0. They came out flying and within the first two minutes of the contest were up 2-0. Newmarket's CHRISTIAN DEDONATO scoring from teammate Jake Bricknell and the Patriots' Michael Boushy (a late replacement for the Junior Canadiens' David Sherman). The second came from the Dukes' MITCHELL MARTAN, assisted by the Rangers' Joey Maziarz and Milton's Eric Ciccolini. BROCK WELSH (recently traded from Whitby to Aurora) added one late in the second with helpers from Wellington's captain Colin Doyle and Andrew Rinaldi. Ciccolini now has four points in three games and Martan three. Team Hawerchuk's final game tomorrow is against LHJQ 'Burrows' and a win will put them into the semi-finals.

Game 6- OJHL 'Oates' (1-1) and MHL (1-1) in Group B.
The teams traded goals in the first period with JORDAN KING, who scored in the MHL team's win earlier against LHJQ 'St. Louis,' finding the net before the Jackson twins of the Buzzers combined to tie things up. It was DYLAN JACKSON from Ty. Both have committed to Northeastern for the 2020-2021 season.
Team Oates went ahead in the second on a goal from blueliner WYATT VILLALTA of the Burlington Cougars. Villalta, whose twin brother, Matt, plays goal for the OHL Soo Greyhounds was a late replacement for the injured Jeff Clarke of the Blades. Villalta came to the Cougars in a trade with the Patriots. Again Ty Jackson had the assist. Truro's DYLAN BURTON got his team back in it scoring at 8.04 and it's 2-2 and the contest is up for grabs. The winning goal was scored by the Blades' SPENCER KERSTEN at 11.33 from the Buzzers' Ncholas Zabaneh and the Junior Sabres' Trevor Peca. Kersten has committed to Princeton for 2019-2020. Insurance was added by an empty-netter from Mason Snell, the former Fury blueliner now with the Dukes. The Tigers' Fraser Kirk repelled 18 for the win.Team Oates plays LHJQ 'St. Louis' in their final round robin contest tomorrow and a win will give them a semi-final berth.

Game 7- LHJQ 'Burrows' (1-1) and CCHL 'Red' (2-1) in Group A.
The final game of the round robin for CCHL 'Red'. The 'Burrows' got off to a quick start with Valleyfield Braves' DEREK DICAIRE putting them one-up but it did not take long for JASON CMUNT to get his team on even terms. Cmunt, a former Buffalo Junior Sabre, now suits up for Carleton Place and is off to Union in 2018-2019. SAMUEL HOULD of Terrebonne restored the Burrows' lead but the Reds' came back on an ETHAN MANDERVILLE tally. Manderville plays for the Kanata Lasers. They would then take the lead for the first time on the Canadians' CONNOR HILL's goal. All five markers came in the first half on a high total of 33 shots.The second half came in stark contrast with the first with no goals being scored but there were still 27 shots on net. CCHL 'Red' finishes the opening round with nine points and will qualify for the semifinals.

Game 8- LHJQ 'St. Louis' (1-1) and CCHL 'White' (3-0) in Group B.
Looking to go a perfect four for four in the round robin CCHL 'White' were up against LHJQ's 'St. Louis' in the final game of the evening but the 4-0 record would elude them. It took just over one minute for 'St. Louis' to go ahead courtesy a goal from SAMUEL GUILBAULT of Longueuil. Hawkesbury's ZACH FOURNIER got his team on even terms but the LHJQ squad regained the lead on a score from blueliner NICOLAS PATRY-GINGRAS from Gatineau to complete the first period scoring. No further goals came in the second half as the 'St. Louis' hung on for the 2-1 victory. Gabriel Morency (Longueuil) stopped eighteen shots to secure the win.

Perhaps surprisingly not one of the sixteen games completed so far has gone to the shootout. There will be a CCHL team in both semi-final games. Big games coming up Wednesday for Team Hawerchuk and Team Oates. Leading pointscorer so far in the competition is Zach Shalloum of the Navan Grads and CCHL Team White. He has 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points. The blueliner is captain of the Grads and previously played for the Gloucester Rangers. He heads to RIT next season. For OJHL teams Ben Evans (Coffey), Eric Ciccolini (Hawerchuk) and Ty Jackson (Oates) all have a goal and three assists for four points.
Standings at the end of day two with four more games scheduled Wednesday. Top 2 in each group advance to semi-finals.
