Buffalo Jr. Sabres alternate captain Ryan Schmelzer (photo credit - Ken Czworka Photos) received his Gongshow Gear South-West Conference Player-of-the-Month Award prior to last night's game versus the Toronto Jr. Canadiens.
On-hand for the presentation was OJHL Manager of Hockey Operations Brent Garbutt (left) and Jr. Sabres Governor Larry Playfair. Schmelzer was presented with a commemorative keepsake in honour of his award and will receive an apparell package courtesy of Gongshow Gear, the Official Hockey Lifestyle Apparell of the OJHL. He was also recognized for being the first-ever Canadian Junior Hockey League First Star of the Month.
Fighting for first place in not only the West Division, but the South-West Conference standings, the Jr. Sabres came from behind on three separate occasions in the game to defeat the Jr. Canadiens 4-3. Schmelzer would continue his torrid scoring pace by notching another two assists, while OJHL leading scorer Tyler Gjurich would score two goals, his 46th and 47th of the season, including the game-winner.
In other OJHL action on a quiet Tuesday night, the Whitby Fury shutout the Pickering Panthers 2-0, led by an 18 save performance from netminder Josh Hickey.
