Former OJHL netminder Mathieu Cadieux (photo credit - Gabe Dickins/Plattsburgh Athletics), now with the Plattsburgh State University Cardinals, was named SUNYAC Goaltender of the Week for the third time this season for his play this past weekend.

After playing two games for the Markham Waxers in 2006-07 as an affiliated midget, the native of Oshawa, Ontario joined the Peterborough Stars full-time beginning in 2007-08.  The lanky netminder would post respectable numbers, consistently with a save percentage over .900, spending a year a half with the Stars before being moved to the nearby Cobourg Cougars.  Following the 2008-09 season, after being named to the OHA's All-Prospect Team, Cadieux accepted a scholarship opportunity to attend Quinnipiac University.  He returned to the Cougars in 2010-11, helping the club to their first plus-500 finish since 2004-05, before finally landing at Plattsburgh last season.

Below if the official press release from the Plattsburgh State Athletics website (www.gocardinalsports.com):

Mathieu Cadieux and Kevin Emmerling of the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team have been named State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Goalie and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for the week ending Feb. 17. Both honorees are receiving weekly awards for the third time this season.

Cadieux stopped a combined 47 shots in a 2-0 weekend for Plattsburgh State to receive goalie of the week honors. On Friday, Cadieux allowed one goal on 22 shots in a 4-1 win against Cortland. He followed up Friday’s showing with a 26-save performance to help the Cardinals secure a 4-3 win over nationally-ranked Oswego State in the regular season finale Saturday night. Cadieux’s 1.75 goals-against average is the lowest in the SUNYAC and seventh best in Division III.

Emmerling earns another rookie of the week nod after contributing four points during a weekend sweep of Cortland and Oswego. The Northbridge, Mass. native opened the weekend scoring Plattsburgh State’s fourth goal of the game in the third period of Friday’s 4-1 win against Cortland. On Saturday, Emmerling figured into three of the four Plattsburgh goals in a 4-3 victory over the Lakers. He added an assist in the first period and scored a power-play goal in the second before tallying the eventual game-winner at 7:45 of the third. He is second among SUNYAC rookies with 24 points.

The Cardinals will enter the SUNYAC Tournament as the second seed, receiving a first-round by. Plattsburgh will host a semifinal game on Saturday at 7 p.m. against the second lowest remaining seed after Wednesday’s quarterfinal matchups. The SUNYAC Quarterfinals feature No. 6 Potsdam at No. 3 Geneseo and No. 5 Fredonia at No. 4 Buffalo State.
