WATERS NAMED SUNYAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Former Stouffville, Lindsay and Markham OJHLer Brett Waters (photo courtesy of Jason Hunter/Potsdam Athletics), now with the Potsdam University Bears, was named SUNYAC Player of the Week for his recent performance this past weekend.

The Uxbridge, Ontario native joined the OJHL as a 16-year old rookie with the Stouffville Spirit in 2004-05, notching five poitns in 22 games played.  The following season, Waters was moved to Lindsay where he would spend the next three seasons with the Muskies.  Recordingn 10+ points in each of his three years, the defenceman was a stabilizing force on the back-end for the club, helping the Muskies gradually increase their point total each season.  The rearguard's final season in the OJHL was spent with the Markham Waxers in 2008-09, where the club's alternate captain would finish second among defencemen with 32 points in 51 games played as the club finished second in the Central Division regular season standings.

SUNY Potsdam men's hockey player Brett Waters has been name the State University of New York Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 17.

On Saturday night, the Bears senior captain scored the game-winning goal in Potsdam's playoff clinching 2-1 victory over SUNY Cortland. Waters broke a 1-1 tie with a shot from the right point at 3:14 of the third period.

This season, the defenseman has two goals and eight assists for a career-high 10 points, having played in all 25 of the Bears contests. He has six goals and 19 assists for 25 points in 96 career games.

Wednesday night, Waters leads sixth-seeded Potsdam into a SUNYAC Quarterfinal showdown at third-seeded SUNY Geneseo at 7 p.m. The Bears split the season series with the Ice Knights this season. Potsdam dropped a 6-2 road decision on Nov. 17 and upset the then 14th-ranked Geneseo squad 4-3 in overtime at Massena Arena on Feb. 9.
