LACOSTA NAMED AUS ATHLETE OF WEEK

Former Wellington Dukes netminder Dan LaCosta (photo courtesy of UNB Athletics), now with the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds, was named the AUS Athlete of the Week for his recent performance.

The native of Labrador City, Newfoundland played one season in the OJHL as a member of the Wellington Dukes in 2001-02.  LaCosta led the Dukes to the club's first of back-to-back regular season titles, ultimately falling to the Brampton Capitals in the league championship series.  He would lead the league with a 1.96 goals against average, the best in league  history to that point and currently the 12th best gaa ever, and his efforts earned him OHA All-Prospect Team honours.  Following the season, LaCosta made the jump to the OHL as a member of the Owen Sound Attack.

Dan LaCosta of the CIS No. 2-ranked UNB Varsity Reds men’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 10, 2013.

LaCosta, a fifth-year goalie from Labrador City, Nfld., was named the most valuable player of the 2013 Subway AUS men’s hockey championship that wrapped up this past week in Fredericton as the V-Reds captured their third consecutive AUS title with a 2-1 series win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

In the best two-of-three championship series, Dan posted two shutouts, including a 1-0 double overtime win in game 1 that lasted over 84 minutes. He also shutout the CIS No. 4-ranked Huskies in the third and deciding game of the series, stopping all 25 shots on goal in a 2-0 victory.

LaCosta started all seven games for UNB in the 2013 AUS post-season, finishing with a 5-2 record, a 1.76 goals against average, a 0.927 save percentage and a pair of shutouts.
