BUCKLES THE OT HERO
Matt Buckles (pictured - photo credit: Mike Ivall/OJHL Images) was the overtime hero for the St. Michael's Buzzers as they downed Georgetown 4-3 to take a commanding 2-0 series lead in their South-West Conference semi-final.
Game one star David Italiano opened the scoring early in the first for the Buzzers as Adrian Ignagni continued to stand on his head between the pipes, stopping 16 Raider first period shots. Georgetown finally broke through and netted goals from Drake hart and Nick Perruccio in the second period, but the Buzzers answered right back with goals 45 seconds apart from Jordan Merante and Jake Evans.
Trailing in the third period, Steve Hladin knotted the game at two just past the five minute mark and both netminders held the fort for the rest of the period to send the game into overtime. Just over seven minutes in, Buckles took a pass from Michael Neville and beat Gabe Grunwald, who replaced Keegan Wilson for the second consecutive game, for a 4-3 victory and 2-0 series lead. Buckles would take home first star honours, followed by Ignagni with a 48 save performance and Hart for the Raiders. Game three will take place at St. Michael's College School Arena on Friday night, March 15, with puck drop at 7:30pm.
