Former Streetsville Derby and Vaughan Vipers netminder Kevin Kapalka (photo courtesy of LSSU Public Relations), now with the Lake Superior State University Lakers, was named a CCHA Scholar-Athlete Nominee as his team's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The Mississauga, Ontario native would play three seasons in the OJHL, split between the Derbys and Vipers, beginning his career during the 2007-08 season in Streetsville as an 18-year old.  Despite playing on the last place club, Kapalka would post respectable numbers and the following year was traded to Vaughan after only six games with the Derbys.  He immediately paid dividends for the Vipers, posting a 7-0-0 record in eight games played to lead the club into the playoffs with a sparkling 2.13 goals against average.  During his final season in Vaughan, Kapalka was the club's undisputed starter, playing a league-high 43 games, while stopping 1,408 shots to post the second best save percentage at .923%.  With a 22-14-7 record, Kapalka led the Vipers to a eighth place finish in the OJAHL, before falling to the first place overall Kingston Voyageurs.  His tremendous season ultimately earned Kapalka his scholarship opportunity to join the Lakers beginning in 2010-11.

Below is the official press release from the official Lake Superior State Athletics website (www.lssulakers.com):
