'CANES EVEN SERIES WITH 1-0 SHUTOUT
The Newmarket Hurricanes returned to home ice and evened the best-of-seven OJHL North-East Conference Final against the Kingston Voyageurs at one game apiece with a 29 save, 1-0 shutout victory by netminder Matthew Wintjes (pictured - photo credit: Brian Watts/OJHL Images).
Wintjes and his counterpart at the other end of the ice, Charlie Finn, were the story of the game as Wintjes posted his second career post-season shutout, while the reigning OJHL Goaltender-of-the-Year stopped 39 of 40 Hurricane shots in the loss.
Despite the lacking of scoring, the game was an entertaining end-to-end, physical affair with the two teams both having quality scoring opportunities. Midway through the second period, with the Vees two men down due to penalties, 'Canes playoff scoring leader Daniel Leavens fired a cross crease shot that caught Finn moving, hit the netminder and went in for the eventual game-winning goal. The goal was Leavens seventh of the playoffs and combined with his strong play on the puck in game two, earned the alternate captain Game MVP honours.
The two clubs return to action tonight in game three of the series at the Invista Centre in Kingston, Ontario with puck drop at 7:00pm
