WINTJES BLANKS BUZZERS IN GAME ONE
Game one in the 2013 OJHL Championship Series got off to a tentative start with both the St. Michael’s Buzzers and Newmarket Hurricanes seeming to feel each other out after not facing their opponent during the regular season.

Just two days removed from their game seven double-overtime victory in Kingston, the Hurricanes played a prototypical road game, wearing down the Buzzers en route to a 1-0 victory, netminder Matthew Wintjes’ second shutout of the post-season.
A nervous first period saw the two teams combine for eight penalties with the visitors outshooting the Buzzers 15-10 at historic St. Michael’s College School Arena. Newmarket’s Calvin Higley had the best chance of the period when he rang one of the post behind Buzzers’ netminder Adrian Ignagni.
The second period saw much of the same with the hard-working ‘Canes once again outshooting the Buzzers, 17-9. Late in the period a tremendous effort from Elliott Burlon saw his rebound fired home by Brandon Francisco for an early 1-0 lead. The goal would prove to be the eventual game-winner in a tight-checking series opener.
Playing with some desperation, the Buzzers attempted a comeback in the third, but were turned aside continuously by Wintjes between the pipes, earning first star honours with his 26 save shutout. Francisco and Ignagni, who was stellar with 38 saves in the losing effort, were second and third stars respectively.
Game two in the final takes place on Thursday, April 11 at the Ray Twinney Complex in Newmarket with puck drop scheduled for 7:30pm.
