26 OJHL ALUMNI NAMED AHA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
Twenty-six OJHL alumni were recently named to Atlantic Hockey's All-Academic Team for having a 3.0 grade point average (gpa) or higher, led by Jason Beattie, Brandon Denham and Chris Porter (pictured 2012/13 - photo credit: Richard Orr/AIC Athletics) who were also named Student-Athletes of the Year for having a 4.0 gpa.
Jason Beattie of the Niagara University Purple Eagles played two seasons in the OJHL as a member of the Newmarket Hurricanes, Markham Waxers and Streetsville Derbys. Brandon Denham played three seasons with the Oakville Blades, helping them capture the OJHL championship as a rookie in 2009-10. Chris Porter played three seasons for the Stouffville Spirit, helping them win the league title in 2011-12, while being named a 2nd Team All-Star and runner-up as the Most Improved Player.
The Canisius College Golden Griffins lead the way with nine former OJHL players named to the Team with the Niagara Purple Eagles second, having five graduates receiving honours. From an OJHL perspective, the Buffalo Jr. Sabres come out on top, placing six of their student-athletes on the list, followed closely by the Burlington Cougars with five members.
Another highlight of the list is former Bowmanville Eagle Ben Parker of Canisius, who wrapped up his NCAA career by receiving All-Academic Team honours for the fourth consecutive year, a testament to his work both on-and-off the ice.
