Cobourg uses shootout to best Wellington, 3-2 (1-0 SO)
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Cobourg Cougars defeated the Wellington Dukes in a shootout 3-2 (1-0 SO).
The two teams needed five turns to complete the shootout.
Cobourg overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Cougars was down 2-0 after a power play goal by Wellington's Abbot Girduckis at 13:38 in the second period. Cobourg tied things up at 2-2 on a goal by Mason Marchment at 14:24 in the third period.
The Cougars' offense rang up 44 shots on the Dukes' net.
Jake Emilio also scored for Cobourg. Other players who recorded assists for Cobourg were Theo Lewis, Landon Schiller, and Connor Armour, who contributed one a piece.
Wellington kept Cobourg's goalie busy throughout the game, and Nathan Perry made 37 saves on 39 shots.
The Dukes were helped by Steven Deeg, who had one goal. Deeg scored on the power play 8:41 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Wellington. Wellington earned a power play opportunity when Matt Martin was put in the box for interference. Erick Delaurentis assisted on the tally. In addition, Wellington received assists from Trevor Cope, Jacob Panetta, and Kyle Paat, who each chipped in one.
The Cougars incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Lucas Machalski made 41 saves for the Dukes on 43 shots. Wellington incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
