One Game, Two Meanings

Hoffman Estates, IL – On Sunday the Chicago Mustangs (10-3) will face the Detroit Waza (10-2) in a game with double meaning. This match is not only the US Open Semifinal, but it is also a pivotal game for playoff birth.

On December 1st the Mustangs traveled to Detroit where they entered the 4th quarter tied at 5. Midway through the fourth the Mustangs struck twice with goals from Miguel Vaca and Nestor Hernandez to take a two-goal lead. Just when Mustangs fans thought they had this one locked up, Detroit struck back with a goal from Costea Decu. Down by one goal the Waza pulled their goalie and added the extra attacker with just over 2 minutes left in the game Aaron Byrd tied the game for Detroit. As the Mustangs tried to regroup Detroit’s momentum was too much to overcome as Decu put another goal in the back of the net with just 0:54 on the clock giving the Waza the 8-7 victory.

It was obvious the loss on December 1st was one the Mustangs took to heart because after this game the Mustangs went on an 8 game winning streak where they outscored their opponents 86-45. The Mustangs have been waiting almost 2 months to get their revenge against the Waza and Sunday’s game at Grand Sports Arena will provide them with that chance.

The offense of the Mustangs, lead by Nestor Hernandez (30 goals), will look to put pressure on them early as the Waza have a late game Saturday night in Rockford. The Mustangs will also rely on the playmaking ability of Omar Tapia and the goal scoring ability of Bryan Velazquez, both coming off a huge US Open Quarterfinal game. “We will need to stay focused for all 60 minutes of this game,” said Armando Gamboa, team President and CEO, “Detroit is a great team and the game will be difficult, especially when we have the US Open on the line.”
