NEWSDate: Feb 07, 2010 Bowles Scores Tying, Winning Goals For Cottonmouths In 3-2 Win Over HuntsvilleBy Kathy Gierer, Columbus Ledger-Enquirer It was a night of Legends at the Columbus Civic Center on Saturday night when the Huntsville Havoc came to call. The crowd of 3,888 was dazzled by Cottonmouths from the past in an entertaining scrimmage prior to the regularly scheduled SPHL contest. Several hours later Snakes center Sam Bowles created legendary memories of his own. Bowles scored both the tying and winning goals as the Snakes captured a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over the Havoc. The game was especially meaningful for both teams. The Cottonmouths grabbed their first victory over Huntsville this season. The Snakes are now 1-4-1 against the first-place Havoc. Because Mississippi was idle, the point Huntsville earned was enough to regain sole possession of first place. Huntsville has owned the top slot or shared it since opening night. Huntsville is now 0-5-2 since goaltender Mark Sibbald left to sign with Mississippi of the Central Hockey League. For Bowles and the Cottonmouths, it was an opportunity to show off for Snakes stars of the past. "It was a packed house which is huge for us," Bowles said. "The older guys bring energy too. It's all about tradition and doing it for everyone who has worn this sweater. The Legends come back here for a reason. They come back because they love it." The Snakes trailed 2-1 late in the third period of an intense, well-played game. Huntsville's Dennis Sicard left the penalty box and the Snakes power play expired. "I'd been out there a while on the power play," Bowles said. "The puck was in the corner and I saw that one of their defensemen didn't have a stick. I shot it and somehow it went in." The score was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation, setting up the drama of three-on-three hockey. |
