Augusta Pro Hockey Name Search Nears Completion

The search for an identity for Augusta's professional hockey team is nearly complete. The team name will be announced this Saturday, March 13th at Somewhere in Augusta (2820 Washington Rd). The announcement will be open to the public and the event will begin at 4:00pm. All are invited to attend.

For a number of weeks the team staff has been accepting name nominations through the Southern Professional Hockey League website. The Augusta Chronicle got in on the effort, posting some of the most popular names on it's website and allowing fans to vote for their favorite. Unfortunately, many of
those names were unable to be used due to legal reasons and trademark infringements.

Entering the final week before the deadline, the team ownership and staff has had to reassess the options. The organization has narrowed it down to five names, all of which reflect a desired theme and character the organization is striving for and are without legal infringements. Each of the names had strong support during the preliminary nominations from fans.

The names are listed below in alphabetical order:

Augusta Brigade
Augusta Chill
Augusta Patriots
Augusta River Hawks
Augusta Snipers

Fans will decide the final results by voting at the Augusta Chronicle's website (chronicle.augusta.com).  The name receiving the most votes as of midnight Friday, March 12th will be the winner.  The new team will begin play in the Southern Professional Hockey League in the 2010-11 season.  Season tickets are on sale now!
