Jimmy Soper was named MVP and top rookie Monday at Angie’s Kitchen in St. Agatha as the Waterloo Siskins handed out year-end awards.

The 18-year-old Waterloo native was also the team’s top goal scorer, with 29 in 48 games. Soper led the team in power-play goals (10), shorthanded goals (five) and tied for the team lead in game-winning goals (five) as well.

The Ron Bruddell Memorial (most points) and Trevor Broome Memorial (Waterloo grad) trophies went to captain Adam Campagnolo, another Waterloo native.

The 19-year-old local minor hockey product had his best season to date with 20 goals and 47 assists for 67 points, despite missing eight games with a knee sprain. He was also named MVP for the winning Golden Horseshoe/Midwestern Conference team in December’s GOJHL all-star game in Kitchener.

The Players’ Favourite Player and Trainers Award went to 16-year-old New Hamburg native Keigan Goetz, who missed the playoffs with tendon damage in his leg.

The Waterloo minor hockey product finished the season with six goals, including two game-winners, and seven assists in 46 games, but impressed teammate with his gritty play on the ice.

“He’s the biggest crash-and-banger I’ve seen as a 16-year-old,” Campagnolo said last month.

The Jim Hall Memorial (playoff heart) Trophy went to Evan Buehler, of Elmira, who led the Siskins in scoring against the Stratford Cullitons in the first round with three goals and two assists in six games.

Graduating 20-year-old Trevor Atkinson, of Burlington, was named the team’s top defenceman after a 41-point (five-goal and 36-assist) season after spending the 2011-12 season at Wilfrid Laurier University.

The top defensive player was Brandon Jones, while fellow Sudbury minor hockey product Jacob Bonin was the Al Peppler Memorial Trophy winner as the most gentlemanly player.

The Nickel City products were two of the most consistent performers for the Siskins in the playoffs. Meanwhile, Bonin, a Wilfrid Laurier student, returned from a long layoff due to compartment syndrome and tendon tear in his knee to record 14 goals, nine assists and 22 minutes in penalties in 33 regular season games.

The Clayt Voisin Memorial Trophy (unsung hero) went to Waterloo’s Ryan Doucette, who had 25 goals, 54 points and contributed in all facets of the game in his rookie season.

P.J. Bridges, of Waterford, Mich., was Theresa Huber Memorial Trophy winner for player contribution while Matt Cruickshank, a native of Shallow Lake, Ont., was the most improved player.

As well, Del Stefanson was the Bob Nelson Memorial Trophy winner as the fan of the year.
