Wentworth would pepper the Buccaneers net with 73 shots on net and score 15 times on their way to 15-7 victory on home ice Thursday night. The Gryphins would seen 11 different players scoring a goal in the contest and an additional three players picked up a point.
It was all Wentworth early on as they scored five goals in the opening period. Tyler Van Kleef got the ball rolling scoring at 4:47 before the Gryphins struck for three in 60 seconds. Kyle Lewis scored and was followed by Mark Corbett 34 seconds later, followed by Jason Popek 26 seconds after Corbett’s. Alex Hutchings ended the scoring for the period at 14:01 and a huge home lead.
Wentworth continue to score at will as Mark Silvestri and Remy Giftopoulos found the back of the net for a 7-0 lead just over five-minutes into the middle stanza. The Buccaneers finally broke the goose egg at 9:21 of the second when Austin Whelan notched his fourth of the season. Brampton would then get some momentum as Noah Hippolyte-Smith and AJ Marchisello scored to get within four of the Gryphins. However, Kevin Harvey scores at 17:55, which was the eventual game winner, and Matt MacLeod lit the lamp seven seconds later for a 9-3 Wentworth lead.
The teams would combine for ten goals in the final 20-minutes of play, but Brampton could not stop the potent Gryphins attack. The Buccaneers would get goals from Whelan, a pair from Massi and one from Manny Sigal while Wentworth saw Matt Beca, Corbett, MacLeod, Van Kleef and Nic Giamou picking up goals.
Lewis led the way with six points on the night for the Gryphins, while MacLeod, Beca, Hutchings and Giftopoulos all had five-point nights. For the Buccaneers, Whelan and Massi had two goals and two assists while Marchisello had a goal and three assists.
Mitchell Payne got the win, his second of the season, after making 28 saves. Dylan Meikle would face all 73 shots from the Gryphins, stopping 58 of them in the loss.
