CCBC review- Week 5
Friday April 28th
Friday saw 5 games, four of which were a double header between the VIU Mariners and the Fraser Valley Cascades, and the PBA Dawgs vs. Edmonton Collegiate.
In game one of the Mariners Cascade series, the Cascades would win 6-2 from a solid pitching performance from Blake Badger who threw five innings with zero runs earned, the bullpen then only allowed one further run to score, recorded by the Mariners catcher Zach Maddin. On the offensive side UFV catcher Oliver Para, recorded two RBI’s, while Jared Hall and Thomas Richards recorded 1 RBI apiece. In game two of the double header VIU edged the Cascades winning 7-5 from the offensive help of Zach McLauchlan who went ⅖ with 3 RBI’s on the day as well as Trent Lawson went ¾, recording 2 RBI’s along with a triple on the day. Bright spot for UFV was Ty Hall who went ¾ but it wasn't enough to win.
The PBA Dawgs and Edmonton collegiate started their series at Re/Max Field where the PBA Dawgs took the first game 4-3 in extra innings. Base Running errors in extras by the Edmonton squad ended up costing them the win. Top performers from game 1 for PBA was Logan King who went 2/4 with a walk and 2 RBI’s. Edmonton's Rejean Bourget went 2/4 with a two run homerun Solid pitching from both sides kept it a low scoring game. Game two of the doubleheader went to Edmonton Collegiate who won 8-3. PBA’s Nick Gravel and Logan were responsible for the scoring as Gravel had 2 RBI’s and King had the one. A great pitching performance by the hawks starting pitcher Liam Foxwho threw a complete game with 8 strikeouts and 4 walks. Offensively, the Hawks got it done from the help of Jacob Mireault who had a 3 RBI game going 2/5, along with Brayden Michetti who had a 2 RBI game.
The series opener between TRU Wolfpack and Victoria Goldentide began Friday where the Wolfpacktook the first game in a close one 4-3. Solid pitching performance by TRU’s Zac Robinson allowed them to take care of business as he threw 6 innings of one run ball. On the offensive side, Hunter Fanshaw had a great game as he plated three of the four TRU runs in this game along with getting 3 hits in 4 at bats. An offensive brightspot for the Goldentide was DH Jordan Bond who had a homerun in 4 plate appearances.
Saturday April 29th
The first two games of the series for the series of the week matchup is between The Calgary Dinos and the Okanagan College Coyotes. The Coyotes took both games on Saturday, the first being 11-5 and the second game 5-3. Gavin Wushke ran into some trouble early as he only went 3 ⅓ . Teagan Ribbink came out of the pen throwing 4 ⅔ innings with 4 strikeouts and 1 earned run. The OC offense was rolling as 7 of the starting nine players had 1 or more RBI’s. Dinos Center fielder Aiden Szautner had a solid day at the plate going 4/5 with 2 extra base hits 1 being a double and the other being a triple. In game two of the series and game two of the double header, Caeleb lumbard went ⅕ and 3 RBI’s from a bases clearing double, the two other runs scored for OC were unearned. Dinos Marcus Coderre had a good game for the Dinos going ¾, other than that the Dinos offense was not there that game, and only scored on fielding miscues by the Coyotes defense.
TRU and the Goldentides continued on Saturday where TRU faltered allowing the Goldentides offense to score 4 runs in the bottom of the ninth inning through the combination of errors and clutch hits, allowing them to walk off and knot the series at 1-1. Victoria’s starting pitcher Ethan Mark had a great outing going six scoreless with 11 strikeouts. Unfortunately he ended up with the no decision as the bullpen allowed 4 runs to score along with 2 unearned runs. Game three of the series, and game two on the day the TRU Wolfpack regrouped and won 5-2. Catcher for the wolfpack H Dolley went ¼ with a three run homerun in the 5th inning which propelled them to the win. The golden tide offense struggled only stringing together 7 hits in their 33 at bats. Tyler Burton was one of the bright spots in the lineup going ¼ with a homerun.
Continuing the series of the Dawgs versus the Hawks, PBA took the first one Saturday in a low scoring game 2-1. PBA’s starting pitcher Aiden Newton threw 6 ⅔ innings of one run ball with 8 strikeouts, and Liam Bilodeau-Minty threw the last 2 ⅓ innings allowing zero runs and 3 strikeouts. Dawg hitters Dymitri Pavlov and Teigen Parenteau each recorded one rbi, responsible for both of the runs that scored for PBA. Pavlov drove a triple for his only hit of the game but was left stranded The lone run driven in for Edmonton was hit by Rejean Bourget. In game three of the series and game 2 of the day, Edmonton took it 7-3 to split the series with PBA 2-2. The Hawks offense came out swinging as they scored 2 runs in the first inning. Two triples were hit in this game by Edmonton Collegiate, by Aiden Schlesinger, and Jake Roggensack, he additionally had 2 RBI’s on his triple hit in the bottom of the 8th inning. There was another great pitching performance from the hawks starter, this time being Reece Devlin who threw 8 frames with only one earned run and nine strikeouts.
Sunday April 30th
Action continued in the series of the week for OC and UofC as game three of the series was underway. The Coyotes took the first one 7-3 from the likes of the catcher Caelebn Lumbard who had an outstanding day at the plate going ¾ with a 2 run homerun. This wasn't the only home run hit for the Coyotes today as outfielder Adrian Orioli got a hold of one in the 7th inning, credited with a pivotal insurance run in the game making it a 6-3 ballgame at the time. He had a great day at the plate as well, going ¾ with two extra base hits, one being a homerun and the other being a double. Starting pitcher for OC Corey Lawson had a great outing on the bump throwing 7 innings with two earned. Connor Robbins rounded out the game throwing two scoreless allowing the Coyotes to take 3-0 series lead going into game 4. Dinos Zach Delaquis had a solid day at the plate going ⅖ with a triple and two RBI’s on the day. Game 4 didn't go to plan for the Coyotes as they lost the game and the sweep 7-3. A solid relief appearance from Calgary's pitcher Callum Matheson kept them in the game as he threw 5 ⅓ scoreless only allowing one hit after coming in for relief. The dinos lineup was consistent with runners in scoring position as they scored Errors proved costly for the Coyotes allowing extra runs to score. A comeback was forming in the top of the ninth but was cut short.
TRU and Victoria's series came to an end in victoria with the Wolfpack winning it 3-1 taking the series 3-1. TRU’s Jacob Fillion threw 6 innings with 5 strikeouts and 5 hits allowed. Reliever Manny Recchi completed the game throwing 3 innings only allowing one. The bottom of the order for the golden tide was solid, amassing 6 hits while the 1-6 hitters only could get two, and that was from one player.
UFV’s and VIU’'s series continues this time at Serauxmen Stadium. The first game of the double header, the Mariners offense exploded, scoring 20 runs, mercy ruling the cascades in 7 innings. In the fifth inning Keegan Chard-Hill hit a home run for the mariners, a three run shot which was a part of the huge 12 run inning. Trevor Nicoll also had a solid day at the plate with 3 hits in 4 at bats with 2 RBI’s. Cascades pitchers totalled 15 walks to the Mariners which played a fundamental role in the loss. The second game of the doubleheader, the mariners took game 2 winning 4-2. James Joyce for the Mariners led the offense going ⅗ with 2 extra base hits, one being a double and the other being a homerun with 2 RBI’s on the day. The Mariners starting pitcher Robinder Dhut had a great day throwing 7 innings giving up 4 hits and only one earned run. The Cascades offense was cold the second game, only tallying four hits over 9 innings.
