Central Michigan Dominates Grand Valley 8-2 in Conference Opener
Mount Pleasant, MI- The Grand Valley State Lakers headed to Mount Pleasant to face off against the Central Michigan DIII Chippewas during the ACHA DIII Game of the Week.
The first period started off very intense. The Lakers and Chippewas sent player after player to the penalty box, and both teams made it very apparent they were playing to win. CMU had control over the puck for the majority of the game, thus preventing any goals being scored by the Lakers in the first period. Nate Allgaier saw an opening in the net, and took the opportunity to score the first goal of the game.
Coming into the second period the players had fire in their eyes. GVSU scored one goal, but Lawrence Rowe got hold of the puck, he shot, and scored! Rowe scored the tie-breaking goal, and CMU went up 2-1. As the period continued captain James Gleason and Ryan Tyrer made their presence known on the ice by getting CMU two more goals. GVSU shot back once again, scoring another goal. Dalton Sutherland finished up the second period scoring his first of three goals. The second period ended 5-2.
The third period began with both teams tense, fighting at any opportunity they got. Sutherland swooped in again and scored another goal, the score now 6-2. Philip Fazio earned another point for the Chippewas in the third, which was also Fazio’s first goal of the season. The Chips were not done yet. Sutherland with another goal! CMU won the game 8-2.
“The Chippewas came out firing on all cylinders and overpowered respected conference foe,” said Shawn Bednard, Chippewa Hockey Network Director of Broadcasting and Chief of Broadcasting for the ACHA Men’s D3. Central Michigan (DIII) moves to 5-0 on the season, and will play Grand Valley tomorrow in Grand Rapids at 4:00 PM.
