CMU Falls Short Against GVSU in Game Two of the Weekend Series

After falling by a score of 10–4 against the Grand Valley State University Lakers at home Friday night, the Central Michigan University Chippewas were out for revenge last Saturday afternoon in Grand Rapids.

The second the puck dropped to start this game, the Chippewas forced a lot of pressure in the Lakers’ zone. But due to excellent positioning by GVSU, Central Michigan was unable to record a shot for an entire minute of having the puck in their attacking zone. But just 29 seconds later, as Grand Valley finally got the puck out of their zone, Jacob Turowski picked up the puck and carried it in for an early goal just 1:29 into the first period to make the score 1–0 for the Chips.

A few minutes passed and CMU’s Dalton Sutherland and GVSU’s Patrick Rapin both headed to the penalty box after Sutherland picked up a trip and Rapin picked up a slashing call after getting back to his feet. So it was 4 on 4 hockey for the next two minutes.

About a minute and a half into the 4 on 4, Grand Valley got their first goal on the board with a shot by Timothy Baldwin, giving him his fourth goal of the weekend and getting this game tied 1–1 with 14:04 to go in the first period.

One of the biggest reasons why game one of this weekend series was so high scoring was because of turnovers by the Chippewas. And that is exactly how GVSU netted their second goal of the game to take the lead. With 8:53 left in the first, Mitchell Lawton of the Lakers’ intercepted a bad pass by the CMU defense, carried the puck into the attacking zone and scored over goaltender Thomas Rofe’s glove hand. Making the score 2–1 Grand Valley State.

Just a minute and 39 seconds later, Justin McComas picked up a roughing penalty after being the second man in on a hit in CMU’s defensive zone putting the Chips on the penalty kill for two minutes.

After a well-defended first half of the penalty kill, GVSU forward Benjamin Kowalske stuffed one into the Chippewas’ net after five or six attempts. Making the score 3–1 after the power-play goal.

The first period of play ended with GVSU dominating the shots column with a shot count of 14–6 over the Chips.

Much like the first period, Central Michigan came out hard to start the second with Jacob Standre scoring off a rebound just 39 seconds into the period making the score 3–2. With the assist from Brendan Nelson, they both extend their point streaks. With Standre now at 16 games and Nelson at 13 games.

Just over four minutes later, Brennan Martin lit the lamp for the Chippewas as he launched a shot from the high slot area over the blocker of GVSU netminder Jared Maddock, after receiving a pass from Nelson, making the score tied at three. Giving Nelson his second assist of the day.

Both teams held each other off for the last 15 minutes of the period to head into the break knotted at three.

Central Michigan started out the third period on a 32-second power play caused by a holding penalty called on GVSU defenseman Avery Hill late in the second period but were unable to capitalize.

After nearly eight minutes of shutout hockey by both teams, GVSU finally breaks the tie as Nathan Madigan ripped a shot through traffic that found the back of the net. Giving him his first goal of the year and giving his team the lead 4–3 with 12:03 remaining in the last period of play.

Grand Valley State wasted no time adding onto their one-goal lead as Timothy Baldwin netted his second goal of the game and fifth goal of the weekend with a shot from the left circle. Putting the Lakers up 5–3 with 10:07 to go.

About a minute and a half later, Trevor Lassaline picked up a hooking call, putting the Chippewas on the man advantage with 8:55 to play. But after a few quality scoring chances, the Chips were unable to cut down the lead.

The last excitement of the game occurred at the 3:39 mark of the final period when Daniel Deblouw scored on a clean wrap-around to extend the Lakers’ lead to 6–3. Which was the final result of this contest.

The Chippewas continue to struggle with putting shots on goal as they get outshot in this game 49–18.

Central Michigan now falls to 13–9–1 on the season, as Grand Valley State improves to 21–6, as they look to return to the national championship (like they did last year).

CMU will be looking for redemption next weekend as they take on the #17 Northwood University Timberwolves at Midland Arena in Midland, Michigan on Saturday, February 8th at 2:50 P.M. As well as Sunday, February 9th at 1:30 P.M. at the Ice Arena in Mount Pleasant
