CHE Player Spotlight: Emily Hockey
NAME: Emily Hockey
SCHOOL: University of Delaware
HOMETOWN: Demascus, MD
YEAR: Junior
POSITION: Forward
Q: What is the single best thing about playing college hockey for your current CHE team?
A: These girls I play with at Delaware are the most fun, loving, and energetic group I have ever played with. They are the perfect group to get on the ice with and forget about the classroom for awhile, which is something I look forward to day and and day out. No other team would be able to take a stress-filled day as a student and turn it into jokes and laughter like my team does.
Q: What is the most-memorable hockey game you have ever been involved in, at any level?
A: Over the summer I played against the USA Wounded Warriors hockey team with my adult league team. They are a phenomenal group of guys who played hockey with the same enthusiasm and heart they served our country with. Their captain named me #2 star of the game, and my puck has hung in my room ever since.
Q: Are there any routines or rituals you must stick to before every game, such as listening to a certain song?
A: When I get dressed, my left shin guard and my left elbow pad have to go on before the rights. I also smooth out the stickers on the back of my helmet before putting it on. I have no idea where the routine came from, but hey, it seems to be working!
Q: Which opposing CHE team do you really enjoy playing against, and why?
A: I enjoy playing against the Naval Academy. They are always such good sports, no matter the score. They give everything they have until the horn at the end of the game, which is something few teams in the league can do week after week. I look forward to playing against them every year to see what they have to bring to the league.
Q: If you were put in charge of the entire sport of hockey and could change just one thing about the game, what would it be?
A: I would add checking to women's hockey. I grew up only playing boys' hockey, where I was sent to checking clinics to understand the importance of checking and to learn how to safely deliver/receive hits. Since hitting is not present in girls' hockey, the players are not as educated, which results in, I believe, more injuries when collisions do happen. Incorporating checking into women's hockey would add a new level to our play and allow the game to become more strategic and safe.
Q: What made you choose to attend your current school?
A: I was denied entry to my number one school and my second choice, Delaware, offered me an academic scholarship that my dad said would be silly to refuse. He is also a Delaware alumni, which I think is where the real push came from! Nevertheless, Delaware was the last school I wanted to attend, but after the first week I fell in love with the academia, hockey, and people. Attending Delaware has been the best decision of my life thus far.
Q: What is your major and what do you want to do with it after graduation?
A: I am a Chemistry major with a Math minor. After graduation, I wish to further my education and attend graduate school, with hopes to one day receive my PhD. I aspire to work in a research lab with an inorganic concentration, but honestly, any job that has to do with chemistry, whether it be research or teaching, will make me happy.
Q: What person outside of your family has done the most for you?
A: My first year chemistry professor and adviser, Dr. John Burmeister. Ever since I came to college, Dr. Burmeister has been there to encourage and give me the opportunity to succeed. Whether it be writing letters of recommendation, pushing me to take classes above grade level, or just letting me rant about the struggle of balancing a difficult major and competitive sports life, he has been there. He is the reason I am so invested in our chemistry department, and I can never thank him enough for all he has done for me throughout college.
Q: Would you rather be Superman or Batman, and why?
A: I would be Batman. He has the swagger and confidence I would want to posses as a superhero, in and out of costume. Also, how could you not want to fly around at night saving Gotham city one crime at a time?
Q: What are your two favorite apps on your smartphone, and why?
A: My first favorite is GroupMe. It allows me to stay connected to my teammates and classmates in big group messages so I can send my funny memes. My second is probably Snapchat. I am sort of a goof and love to send my friends terrible pictures of myself or other people as often as I can. They embody our generation's need to stay connected to as many people as possible, in as many ways as possible.
