The Copperheads returned home to begin a short two-game series with the Grand Lake Mariners on Tuesday.  There was not much offense in the opening game of the series as Mariners’ starting pitcher Shawn Malone dominated the Copperheads’ (7-3) bats to push Grand Lake (6-4) to a 2-1 victory.

Malone (1-0) finished the night allowing just one run on one hit in six innings pitched.  Malone finished with 88 pitches.

Dan Lindner (2-1) got the start for the Copperheads and only lasted 3 2/3 innings.  Lindner allowed just two runs on three hits but his pitch count was elevated.

Lindner’s rough inning came in the third.  Dylan Bell singled in the Mariners’ first run of the game.  Later in the inning, Hiroyuki Okajima scored the runner from third base with a single to put Grand Lake up 2-0.

The only hit Malone allowed was to Will Manson in the fourth inning.  John Stabler drove in the Copperheads’ only run with a sacrifice fly later in the inning.

The Copperheads finished the evening with just two hits.

The bullpen was the bright spot for the Copperheads as it allowed no runs on just four hits in 6 1/3 innings. Alvin Sparks Jr. relieved Lindner and threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings.  Pavone Wise pitched two shutout innings and David Waite pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

The Copperheads now only lead by a single game in the GLSCL over Grand Lake.

D.J. Ryan picked up his third save of the season for the Mariners.

Grand Lake and Southern Ohio meet again on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on the Southern Ohio Copperheads’ YouTube Channel.
