Copperheads couldn't get it done in their home opener
Bob Wren Stadium- Opening night at Bob Wren Stadium was a night filled with many fans, fun games, home runs and fireworks. The Copperheads fell short to the Grand Lake Mariners 3-11.
The Grand Lake Mariners ended the contest with eleven runs off ten hits, while Southern Ohio produced three runs off seven hits.
In the bottom of the first frame the Copperheads started well, Billy Adams had a single in the 3-4 hole, he advanced to second off a single in the 3-4 hole from Alex Ungar. Ben Clark loaded the bases off a walk. Southern Ohio was able to string some hits together, but not enough to produce any runs. The inning ended with two hits and three left on base.
In the top of the second, Grand Lake was able to muster three runs off two hits. Leading off with back-to-back hit-by-pitch, Brayton Bowen hit a two RBI triple down the list base line; scoring Drew Emerson and Jackson Rains. Johnny Nixon produced a quality at-bat sacrifice fly to score Brayton Bowen. The inning ended with two left on base.
The Copperheads answered with one run in the bottom of the second. Trenton Neuer had a one RBI double to right center scoring Aiden Dunlap. The inning ended with one hit, one run, and one left on base.
The next two frames stayed scoreless, with Grand Lake showing well in the top of the fifth inning. Jackson Rains had a home run and Brayton Bowen had a double. Grand Lake scored three runs off two hit, leaving three left on base.
Southern Ohio produced one run in both the sixth and the seventh. Alex Ungar had a solo home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Tyler Sparrer leads the inning off with a single. Off a few wild pitches, Tyler Sparrer was able to reach third, scoring off a right-side putout from Cooper Thompson.
Grand Lake was able to tack on four more runs in the top of the ninth off one hit, leaving three left on base.
Grand Lake used a total of three pitchers, combining for four walks on the night and six strikeouts: allowing three runs. Southern Ohio used four pitchers on the night, combining for a total eight walks and six strikeouts: allowing ten runs on the night.
Notable offensive performances for the night for Grand Lake; Jackson Rains went 3-5 with two singles and a home run. Brayton Bowen was 2-6 with a two RBI triple and a double.
Notable Offensive performances for the night for Southern Ohio; Alex Ungar was 2-4 with a single and a solo home run. Trenton Neuer was 1-5 with a double to right center.
The Copperheads are back in action tonight June 8th with the first pitch starting at 5:05.
