The Port aux Basques Junior Mariners did something no team had done before them all season long - they defeated the defending champion Central Cataracts.

   The Junior Mariners defeated the Central Cataracts 8-3 in Exploits Home Hardware Central West Junior Hockey League action Sunday at the Bruce II Sports Centre.

   The hometown squad earned a weekend split after being dumped 6-3 by the league-leading Cats Saturday night in Port aux Basques.

   Riley Ricks scored four goals to lead the Junior Mariners to victory Sunday.

Jon Organ and Greg Edgar scored two goals apiece to round out the scoring parade for the gateway town representatives.

   David Byrne, Neil Oake and Scott Cantwell scored for the baby Cats.

On Saturday, Travis Champion bulged the twine of five occasions to lead the Cats to a 6-3 victory.

   Neil Oake scored the other goad for the 13-1 Cats.

   Ricks, Organ and Edgar lit the lamp for the Junior Mariners, who hold down second spot in the standings with a 10-4 record.

   The following is a look at how things fared in a two-game set between the Corner Brook Junior Royals and Stephenville Junior Jets at the Stephenville Dome over the weekend.

 

Junior Royals 3, Junior Jets 2

Mark McWhirter scored the winning goal for the baby Royals in Sunday's contest at the Stephenville Dome.

  Ryan Compton scored two for the winners.

  Mark Piercey and Johnny Bennett lit the lamp for the Junior Jets.

 

Junior Jets 4, Junior Royals 3

Adam Green notched a hat trick to lead the offensive charge for the Junior Jets, while Gordie Scott scored the other marker.

  Ryan Billard (2) and Andrew Hancock took care of the offence for the baby Royals.
