Raiders clip Voodoos in Dudley-Hewitt Cup action Thursday

TRENTON, Ont. – The Georgetown Raiders (OJHL) picked up a pair of goals from rookie Jack Hughes to help lead them to a 5-2 victory over the Powassan Voodoos (NOJHL) Thursday afternoon in Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canadian Jr. A Championship action in Trenton, Ont.

Powassan (1-2) will now await the outcome of tonight’s final round robin contest between the host Trenton Golden Hawks (1-0-1) (OJHL) and Dryden GM Ice Dogs (1-1)  (SIJHL) at 7:30 p.m. to determine whether they will play on.

A Trenton win, or a loss in either overtime or a shootout will send the Voodoos to Friday’s semifinal match-up, but should Dryden come away victorious in regulation time, the GM Ice Dogs would advance and Powassan’s season will come to an end.

In Thursday’s game, Georgetown (2-0-1) picked up the first goal of the contest 4:44 in as they worked a loose puck to Matt McJannet who shot was stopped by Nate McDonald in the Voodoos net, but the rebound went to an open Hughes in front who knocked his first of the DHC.

The Raiders tacked on another just over a minute later as Jordan Anderson blew past a Powassan defender on the left side then roofed a wrist shot over the shoulder of McDonald.

Getting one back before the first period was complete, Andy Baker put the NOJHL-champions on the board as he cut across the crease and outwaited a sprawling Josh Astorino in the Raiders net and lifted a backhander high into the top of the net at 17:05.

Building on the momentum of that marker, the Voodoos struck quickly in the middle stanza to level the proceedings as they finished off a bang-bang play with Parker Bowman finishing off the work Eric Nagy and Gabriel Rheault from close range at the 52-second mark.

The Raiders regained the lead however with 4:01 left in the session as Ryan Takamatsu capped off a three-way passing play with OJHL MVP Jack Jacome and Louis Kereakou collecting assists on the playthat proved to be the eventual game-winner.

Georgetown went back up by two once again as defenceman Austin Cho sent Jacome in all alone on a breakaway and he would not be denied as his lifted his chance over McDonald’s blocker to make it 4-2 just 70 seconds into the final session.

Moments after Astorino right pad denied Bowman on a shorthanded breakaway, the Raiders came right back and capped off the scoring as a Josh Dickinson wrap around was stopped, but Hughes stuffed in the loose puck for a man advantage effort at 14:40.

Shots on goal favoured Georgetown by a 44-26 count with Astorino picking up the win and McDonald the loss.

Earning player of the game honours was Baker and Hughes.
