Coventry Blaze secured a valuable road win in Guildford on Saturday evening, topping the Flames 4-1 despite handing the Surrey side a series of powerplay opportunities.

Marc-Olivier Vallerand gave Coventry the lead after three and a half minutes, with Garrett Ladd doubling the advantage 45-seconds later.

The Flames cut into the Coventry lead in the 12th minute when Mikael Lidhammar converted with the man advantage but a strong defensive effort from the Blaze limited Guildford’s opportunities thereafter, Jordan Pietrus eventually restoring the two goal cushion late in the second period.

Despite handing the Flames a further four powerplay opportunities in the final frame, the Blaze defence continued to hold firm, Vallerand grabbing his second of the night short handed in the 53rd minute assisted by Vojtech Kloz.
