2+10: MILTON KEYNES LIGHTNING FORWARD GUILLAUME DOUCET
Milton Keynes Lightning forward Guillaume Doucet has enjoyed a good season as part of Pete Russell’s side as they take to life in the Elite League like a duck to water.
But who is the man behind the hockey player and more importantly, what item would he save in the event of a fire?
New feature, 2+10, goes into these topics as we found out about Guillaume Doucet and what he did last summer.
1) What have been your impressions of MK Lightning and Milton Keynes so far?
A: I think I’m pleased with the Lightning so far. We’ve been playing well and got better as the season’s gone on. We’ve dropped a couple of games so far, but as a new team, it has to be expected. But I like the direction the team is going and we’re very pleased to be finishing first in our Challenge Cup group.
As for the city, it’s really cool. I like that it’s so close to London and the boys and I will try to go there as often as we can. There’s plenty going on in Milton Keynes and you can never get bored.
2) Who is the biggest joker in the locker room?
A: We have a lot of guys that like to be funny and play jokes, but Matt Nickerson is one of them. So is Kyle Essery when it comes to jokers.
3) What did you want to be as a kid growing up?
A: Obviously I wanted to be a hockey player. Growing up in Montreal, you wanted to get the chance to play in the NHL, but I realised pretty quickly that wasn’t going to happen, but yeah, I always wanted to be a hockey player.
4) What’s the best goal you’ve ever scored?
A: That’s a tough one. I scored a big goal in the semi finals of my last senior year in college so we could qualify for the finals. Last year, I scored the first goal in the play-off final for Cardiff, but was probably my worst goal as we went in off the D-man’s pants or something to go in.
5) What do you want to do when you retire?
A: I’m not sure yet. I’ve been thinking about that for a long time. We know a hockey career can be over at any time so you have to be prepared. I have a Bachelor’s degree in education and a Masters in business and would like to use that and stay in sports.
6) Who’s been the biggest influence of your career?
A: Obviously, my family. My parents, especially my dad and my uncles have been present the whole time, but if I had to name one person in particular, it would be really hard. There hasn’t been a coach, team-mates or sports psychologists that stand out. It’s more a mix of people that have helped down the years.
7) If you were stuck on a desert island with only one DVD or boxset to watch, what would it be?
A: I’d have to make a strategic decision and go with something I’ve never seen. Plus something that’s pretty long as I’m not the kind of person to rewatch shows over and over so I would go with The Wire, which I believe is very good.
8) If there was a fire at your home and all your family and pets were safe, what one item would you rush back in to save?
A: There’s nothing really that I want to save in particular. There’s nothing that comes to mind certainly, but if I were to pick something, my girlfriend’s handbag, as that’s probably the most valuable thing in there.
9) What was the last book you read?
A: The Phil Jackson biography, Eleven Rings. He’s a basketball coach.
10) What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
A: It has to be what we did last summer. My girlfriend and I left for Asia for 67 days and we only brought a seven kilo carry-on backpack each.
11) Tell us something about you nobody knows:
A: I like to listen to a lot of cheesy French music
12) What will you do after we finish this interview?
A: I’m off to go and watch The Great British Bake Off. I love that show.
