RESULT: STEELERS 2 GIANTS 3
Belfast Giants moved back into first place in the Elite League thanks to a narrow win in Sheffield on Sunday evening.
Veteran forward Colin Shields put the Giants ahead just past the midway point of the first period, but Colton Fretter was able to equalise for the Steelers in the 16th minute, leaving the two sides level at the first break.
Belfast regained the lead late in the second period, Sebastien Sylvestre’s smart pass finding Brendan Connolly who beat Steelers goaltender Ervins Mustukovs to register the only goal of the period.
The two sides continued to trade chances, the Belfast securing a crucial third goal in the 52nd minute when David Rutherford and captain Blair Riley combined to set up Darcy Murphy.
Sheffield cut the deficit to one just under three minutes later when Team GB forward Robert Dowd found the back of the net, but the South Yorkshire side were unable to beaten the Belfast defence again, Giants goaltender Jackson Whistle finishing the game with 21-saves.
