Scorpions Drop Both Ends of Doubleheader to River Rats

Sanford, FL - The Scorpions faced the River Rats in a doubleheader on June 29th with a continuation of the rain-delayed game that was played June 27th. The Scorpions lost the first game 3-2, as well as the second game 4-2. 

 

The Scorpions scored a run in the first on June 27th.

 

Rigsby Mosley (Troy) drew a walk from Hamp Skinner (Samford). A passed ball from the River Rats put Mosley on second. With Bryant Harris Jr. (West Florida) at the plate, Mosley stole third. He was driven home after Anthony George (UCF) singled. 

 

The River Rats added runs to the board in the first and second inning when the game resumed on June 29th.

 

The Scorpions responded tying the game in the third.

 

Garrett Zech (USF) singled into center field. He moved to second after Rigsby Mosley hit to third. Zech was driven home after Bryant Harris Jr. singled into left field. 

 

Trey Van Der Weide (USC Upstate) shined during the game, pitching seven innings with five strikeouts. 

 

The Scorpion continued to prevent the River Rats from scoring until the eighth. 

 

A walkoff single from Omar Villaman (Florida Southern) scored Brian Lavastida (Hillsborough) to end the game in the eighth. 

 

In game two, the Rats came close to scoring in the third, but were unsuccessful

 

The Scorpions were fearful of the Rats taking the lead with bases loaded. The Rats had two outs in the inning, but it was up to Eric Keating (Florida Atlantic) to prevent a hit from John Jones (South Carolina). Keating struck out Jones closing the inning and maintaining a tied game 0-0. 

 

The Scorpions prevented the Rats from scoring in the fourth.

 

Omar Villaman’s (Florida Southern) single towards Jack Strunc (Creighton) was driving Zach Diewert (Missouri) home before the Scorpions tagged him out. Strunc fired the ball to Andres Ugarte (Reinhardt) for the second out of the inning.  

 

Francis Villaman (St. John’s River) attempted to steal home with Jackson Muldowney (North Greenville) at the plate. Villaman was caught in a rundown between Andres Ugarte and Trace Thornal (Southeastern). Villaman was tagged out by Ugarte which closed the inning. 

 

The River Rats took the lead in the sixth with a leadoff solo homer from John Jones 1-0. 

 

The Rats continued their home run streak with a homer from Francis Villaman (St. Johns River). Villaman’s homer drove in Gunnar Lambert (Florida Atlantic) raising the score 3-0.

 

The Rats added another run in the eighth, raising the score 4-0. 

 

The Scorpions tacked on two runs in the ninth.

 

Trace Thornal (Southeastern) singled into right field. Tanner May’s (Southeastern) single into left field advanced Thornal to second. A walk from Garrett Zech moved Thornal to third and May to second. 

 

A single from Ray Alejo (UCF) drove in Thornal and May to make the score 4-2.

 

The Altamonte Springs Scorpions will face the Leesburg Lightning on June 30th with a doubleheader/continuation of a rained-out game. The first pitch starts at 5pm at Lake Brantley High School.
