Scorps split second straight doubleheader with Leesburg
Game 1
Wednesday afternoon's game against Leesburg was as ugly as a baseball game could get. On the road against the No. 1 team in the standings -- the Leesburg Lightning -- the Seminole County Scorpions fell in a shortened game. The 13-0 score on the board at Pat Thomas Stafium would end the seven-inning contest prematurely and give the Scorps their 23rd loss of the season.
For Leesburg, it was an exceptional night at the plate as the team combined for 17 hits during the first contest. Every Scorps pitcher that saw action in the contest gave up at least one hit to their opponents.
On the offensive side, Seminole County ran into similar problems its offense did. Collecting only one hit from Will Acuff (Alabama Huntsville), the Scorpions failed to get a runner to third base the entire game.
Cade Davenport (Undecided) was arguably the only gem for the Scorps during game one. He came in to finish the sixth inning, giving up only one hit and facing only four batters.
Game 2
A completely different narrative and a turned around team took the field for Seminole County. Getting the start was Logan Collie (Liberty), the right-handed arm that came into the summer undecided on where he would play.
Collie looked like the pitcher the Scorpions needed. He threw a complete game for the Scorps, giving up only one run on four hits and struck out three batters. The righty constantly used his arsenal of pitches to keep the hitters for Leesburg off balance.
"The last two outings, he's done a really good job for us," coach Steve Stowell said. "He came out, threw strike, kept them off balance and just went after the hitters and let them get themselves out."
The Liberty man was able to throw only 87 pitches, converting 54 of them for strikes.
On the offensive side, the Scorpions hitters did just enough to keep the game from going any further. Alex Ray (Tallahassee CC) had two singles and an RBI during the first half of game one, driving in the go-ahead run on an infield single down the third base line.
Trace Thornal (Valdosta St.) and Kerry Carpenter (Virginia Tech) each had multi-hit games, while Anthony George (UCF) kept his season batting average around .300 with a 1-for-3 contest.
Paxton Rigby (Georgia Tech) drove in the first run of the game for the Scorps on an RBI groundout to the right side to score Carpenter from third.
The Scorps now have a big task at hand. After splitting Wednesday's doubleheader and seeing losses from Winter Garden and Winter Park, Seminole County sits just half a game out of the final playoff spot for the 2018 playoffs.
A home-away-home series with the DeLand Suns (21-16) awaits the Scorpions which will start on Thursday.
