Snappers Stay Hot, Win Five Straight
Sanford, FL – The Seminole County Snappers (6-4) in a 4-2 game defeat the Loggerheads (3-9) for the third time in three days. With the loss, the Loggerheads continue their losing streak now at four games.
The Loggerheads begin the game with the first two batters getting on via error on groundballs. Snappers’ Connor Harris (George Washington) produced a third ground ball, this time for a 6-4-3 double play leaving just one man at third with two outs. Two hitters later, Harris got another Loggerheads’ batter to hit into a ground ball ending the top of the inning. At the bottom of the first, JD Urso (Tampa) was the first to get on base with a Loggerheads’ error. Austin Davis (West Virginia) walked and stole a base along with Urso to move two runners into scoring position. Snappers strike two runs on the board when Giovanny Lorenzo (Stetson) in his only at-bat singled both Urso and Davis in to score. The Snappers would not add another run until fifth.
The Loggerheads used just two pitchers for the entire game. Starter Michael D’Emo (Tampa) and Justin Clark (West Virginia) both worked three innings and faced 14 batters. Combined, they allowed 3 earned runs, struck out five, and walked four.
After getting shut out in the first and second inning, the Loggerheads tie the game up a two in the third. The lead-off hitter in the third, Ben Abernathy (West Virginia) walked on 5 pitches and stole second and third with zero outs on the board. Next man up, Tyrell Brewer (Charleston Southern) hit a full-count single bringing home Abernathy cutting the lead to one. Brewer also stole a base and moved to third on a wild pitch from Connor Harris. Brewer was able to tie the game on a Ryan Fischer (Indiana) 6-3 groundout. The Loggerheads only came close to scoring one more time in the fourth with runners on the corners with no outs. However, the Snappers secure three outs off a Weston Eberly (Columbia) behind the plate pick off to first, a strikeout and a flyout to leftfield. The help of Snappers’ Brock Fagler (State College at Florida) and Melvin Cotto (Eastern Florida State) who collectively faced 17 batters in four innings pitched allowed no runs while striking out four. Fagler received the win and Cotto earned the save.
The Snappers would take the lead in the fifth. Already with a hit in the game Cody Forster (Embry-Riddle) doubles to right field just missing the glove of the outfielder. On a strange play, Forster ran home only to be sent back to second because of an umpire’s interference. It turned out okay because JJ Gonzalez (St. Johns River State) ripped a single that was hit hard enough to score Forster. The Snappers added a run in the sixth for some insurance. Joel Brewer (Wallace CC) smacked a double given enough distance to go yard but not enough height to get over the wall. Brewer extended the lead to two runs following a Kyle Mock (Troy) RBI single. The Snappers combined to beat the Loggerheads 21-5 in the last three appearances and scored 33 runs during their win streak.
Snappers will keep the train rolling back in Sanford against the Diamond Dawgs at 11. The Loggerheads looking to get a win in the nightcap at Sanford against the River Rats.
