Introducing the 2024 Suns Coaching Staff

DeLand, FL- The 2024 DeLand Suns roster is shaping up to be a promising one. Cameron Jergens, 33, will lead the Suns as the new head coach this summer. Jergens will take over from Matt Swiderski, who previously coached the Suns for one season.  Since 2017, Jergens has been an integral part of the Daytona State Falcons as their pitching coach and recruiting coordinator, and his passion for the game should make it an exciting time to be a Suns fan.

Jergens, a native of Centreville, Michigan, brings a wealth of playing experience to the Suns.  His journey in baseball started after graduating from Centreville High School in 2009, where he continued to pursue his college dreams at Daytona State.  He played for three seasons, and in 2012, he was named NJCAA Academic All-American.  From there, he transferred to North Carolina A&T State, where he shined as a two-way player, earning All MEAC honors.

While Jergens may be new to the Florida League circuit, his coaching prowess is undeniable. In 2015, he took on the hitting coach role at Coker University, a division two program in South Carolina. His strategic approach and dedication to player development led to the team ranking nationally with a .319 batting average in 2016. He then stepped up as the summer head coach for the St. Charles Captains in the Lewis and Clark collegiate baseball league, guiding the team to a historic victory in 2016. The Captains became the first team to clinch the title after making the playoffs as a wild card team, a testament to Jergens' leadership and the character he builds.

Joining Jergens on his staff is none other than Mike Powers, whom Suns fans are familiar with, acting as the head coach from 2020-2022 and moving into an assistant position last season. Powers was instrumental in helping Jergens prepare for the summer and constructing the roster, as they met several times earlier in the year about their vision for the team. Powers has head coaching experience, leading Seminole High School for many years. During his playing career, Powers was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the ninth round in the 1980 MLB draft, pitching three seasons in their minor league system. Allende Gill is set to join Jergens as his third base coach, with hitting coach responsibilities. Gill comes over after being an assistant for Lake Sumter, joining the lake hawks in August of 2023. Carson Walden will also join the Suns in his second season as an assistant, completing the coaching staff and acting as the first base coach. Walden will attend the University of Central Florida this fall, where he will work towards becoming a police officer.

Introducing the 2024 Suns Interns

Four interns will be in charge of all things behind the scenes throughout the 2024 season. This summer, our General Manager will be none other than Edward Tiberi (Florida Southern College).  This will be Tiberi's second year as an intern for the Suns, as he was a Team Operations intern last season.  He will graduate in 2026 with a Biology degree, hoping to work with human DNA.

Maddi Weyenberg (University of Georgia), a Communications major, will be the head of social media for your Suns, providing updates and content as the season progresses.  Weyenberg has experience working with the Georgia men's club lacrosse team and doing video work for the football team this past Spring.  She will graduate in 2026 and is looking to become a sideline reporter.

Dylan Stanley (Dordt University) will be responsible for Communications for the Suns this summer.  Throughout the season, Stanley will be the team's leading voice, publishing articles and covering every Suns game.  He graduated in 2024 with a Sports Management degree and is passionate about calling games for a professional team in the future.

Team Operations will be led by Nina Szklany (Lynn University).  She will graduate in 2026 with a Sports Management degree.  Szklany has been a mid-distance runner for Lynn's track and cross-county teams since 2022 and wants to pursue a career in sports.
